Juvenile Championship
HICLASS AND GRAND
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The trial races to the final of the Juvenile Championship were held on Nov. 21, 2021, with the participation of 24 two year olds, all bred in the United States. The 10 fastest in these trials returned to the track three weeks later to compete for a purse of $1,154,900 pesos ($54,651 U.S. approx.) at a distance of 400 yards.
In these trials, Island Candy stood out, setting the best time with :19.366, followed by Jess Sixy Perry with :19.508; a big enough difference to consider Island Candy a heavy favorite to collect the biggest part of the aforementioned prize.
However, at the start of the final, he stumbled and that determined his result, closing in ninth place. On the other hand, luck favored Hiclass And Grand, who from the 10-post raced freely and endured the distance very well to make a spectacular closing and finish in first place under the command
of Alejandro Gómez Díaz. His lead was 3/4-lengths over DBL Prize, who made his run
very close to the inside rail with Rogelio Sáenz up. The winning time was :19.28 for a 99 speed index.
Hiclass And Grand came into the finals with the seventh fastest time of :19.832, which he obtained by winning his heat with a 1 1/4-length advantage over MS Painted Perry Z. Without a doubt there was a noticeable improvement in his performance between one race and the other.
This son of the stallion
FDD Going Grand and out
of Hiclass Little Lily (by
Hiclass La Jolla) was bred
by Harold M. Jeanotte and is the property of the Cuadra Jojola R, where he is trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortez. He was purchased at the Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale in Oklahoma for $9,700, a figure that seems small considering the purse received:
approximately $22,953. His record is now 2-2-1 in five starts.
DBL Prize (Fast Prize Cartel-Eyesontheprice, Red Hot Rhythm) captured second place for Cuadra H-R, ridden by Rogelio Sáenz for trainer Ismael Ayala.
In third place was Jess Sixy Perry (Mr Jess Perry- Sixy Silhouette, Corona Cartel), ridden by Yair Daniel Báez Soto for the aforementioned Cuadra H-R and trainer Ismael Ayala.
BR Favorito Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Hawk Kue Pie), MS
Painted Perry Z (PYC Paint Your Wagon-MS Valiant Perry), Fabulous Laura (One Fabulous Eagle-Coco Corona), Geopolitical (Apollitical Jess-Rieda Hay Worth), Player X Three (Mr Jess Perry-Mischievous Player), Island Candy (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Eye On This Candy)
With a spectacular finish, Hiclass And Grand and Alejandro Gómez dominated in the $54,651 Juvenile Championship.
