Speed News
This month has proved successful for two Paints in particular. First, Hotwiredotcom won the first 350-yard trial of the May 19, 2017 Grade 1 $200,000 Speehorse Graham Futurity for Paints & Appaloosas by an easy 1 1/4-lengths over his nearest competitor. Along with jockey Larry Payne, Hotwiredotcom covered the fast track with a time of :17.564, winning the top qualifying spot over Bully Pulpit at :17.802 and PHQ Goodbye Larry at :17.862.
Hotwiredotcom has qualified for all three futurities in which Paints are eligible this season. He is a 2015 brown tobiano gelding by CRM Livewire and out of Iwilliewantarunner (QH). Hotwiredotcom was bred and is owned by Shirley Wheeler of Boynton, Oklahoma, and is trained by Guillermo Valdivia.
The next victorious Paint this month was Painted Turnpike. The Paint racer first overtook his competitors at the Grade 1 $31,746
Mister Lewie Memorial Stakes for Paints and Appaloosas on May 19, 2017. With jockey Cody Smith aboard, the team covered the 400 yards of muddy track and won by 2 lengths over PYC Ballerina and Dashin JJ. A heavy betting favorite at 1-5 odds, Painted Turnpike earned $19,026 which pushed his lifetime earnings
to $336,057. This 2015 bay Solid Paint-bred stallion is by PYC Paint Your Wagon (QH) and out of High Class Turnpike. Painted Turnpike
is owned and was bred by Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma.
Painted Turnpike also prevailed at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Stakes at Remington Park on June 2. The stallion with jockey Cody Smith handled the 440 yards of fast track in :21.648 to win the race by a full length. Painted Turnpike was followed by PYC Ballerina and BP Apollitical Sun. This makes for his 10th career win at Remington Park and his 16th win overall. Along with this record, the win also brought Painted Turnpike another $20,892 in winnings and increasing
his career earnings to $356,949. He is now
less than $5,000 away from matching the all- time earnings mark by Paint, previously set by multiple World Champion Got Country Grip.
Barrel News
At the Rocky Pro Rodeo June 9–11, 2017, THC Lynard—a 2009 sorrel solid Paint-bred gelding by Frenchmans Specialty (QH) and out of Strut Me Special—and Crystal Christman clocked a time of :18.034 for the win. The event took place in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada. This Paint racer is owned by Cayla
Melby of Bokchito, Oklahoma, and was bred by Dan Thomas of Burneyville, Oklahoma.
Lil Gracie Dude took home first place at the Mineral Wells Rodeo May 11–13. Lil Gracie Dude is owned by John Fulton Murray III of Fort Worth, Texas, and was bred by Glenn Watson of Paris, Texas. The 2000 sorrel solid Paint-bred gelding is by Smart Lil Crimson and out of Gracies Doll (QH). Lil Gracie Dude and Tillar Murray ran a time of :15.61 at the event in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Coming in as a finalist for the Old Fort Days Futurity & Super Derby May 22–27 was Famous Perkfection; he came in 13th at the Fort Smith, Arkansas, event. The 2013 black solid gelding is owned and bred by Donald Rejc of Kenockee, Michigan, and he’s by Famous Bugs (QH) and out of Miss Sugar Perks. Famous Perkfection and Craig Brooks ran a time of :16.954 in the first round and :16.971 in the second.
KN No Moe Siss and Amy Wilson took home fourth place at the Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo May 25–27. The team ran a time of :17.57 at the event in Garden City, Kansas.
A 2008 sorrel solid Paint-bred gelding by KN Mojo Jojo and out of Siss Virtue (QH), the barrel horse is owned by Jackie Kneice of Pelion, South Carolina, and was bred by Stephen Nichols of Brownwood, Texas.
At the Red Desert Classic Futurity
June 2–4, Magic Moon Lark and Stacie Stephenson won third-place overall. The team earned a time of :15.501 and an overall time of :31.251. Magic Moon Lark is a 2012 bay tobiano gelding by Darkelly (QH) and out
of Roll The Moon. The Paint racer is owned by Stacie Stephenson of Blackfoot, Idaho, and was bred by Bosen Land & Livestock of Lewiston, Utah.
