The 1962 foal crop of Depth Charge con- sisted of 11 starters with nine ROM, including stakes winner Kaweah Shue Fly, winner of the Yakima Meadows Derby, and stakes placed Bob Charge, who finished third in the Prescott Downs Futurity. Kaweah Shue Fly is out of Hug’s Jet by Real Hug TB. Bob Charge is out of Bay Bobbie by Bob Jr by Flying Bob by Chicaro. As an added note, the dam of Bob Jr is Black Annie, the dam of Johnny Dial.
Huntley stood Depth Charge at stud until 1962 when he was sold to E.K. “Tiny” Johnston and Bob Moore Jr. Johnson and Moore stood Depth Charge with Dr. R. K. King in Tulsa, Oklahoma. By this time, Depth Charge was experiencing lower fertility and only had five starters in 1963. shows in today’s records a speed index of 100. The 1964 crop by Depth Charge had only two starters, including ROM earner Hardway
Ten, who is out of Mary Sunshine 29 by Her- man Hughes. Depth Charge was moved to the E. K. Johnston Ranch in Shamrock, Texas, in 1964 where he would sire seven starters, includ- ing Tetracharge who is out of Violated by Bart B S by Dee Dee by Flying Bob by Chicaro.
The last two starters by Depth Charge were foaled in 1966 and were race winners.
Depth Charge died in 1965, leaving a great legacy as a sire. The AQHA shows that he sired 221 foals with 115 race starters. They earned 80 ROM, with 14 stakes winners and 14 stakes placed runners. His runners include four Champions that earned seven champi- onships: 1952 World Champion and 1952 Champion Stallion Johnny Dial; 1952, 1953 and 1954 Champion Gelding Brigand; 1953 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Super Charge; and 1963 Champion Aged Stallion The Hay- maker. His runners have earned $583,468.
This is only a part of the story of Depth Charge, however, and next time we will look at his influence on the pedigree today.
