CELEBRATING
SPEEDHORSE
Celebrates 50 Years Covering Quarter Horse Racing
First mast page from the first magazine published. Volume 1. Issue 1.
August of 1969.
Walt Wiggins began Speedhorse Publications
in 1969 in Roswell, New Mexico, making 2018 the celebration of 50 years in business. The magazine was called Quarter Racing World. After moving to Norman, Oklahoma, the first edition of “The Speedhorse” was published in January of 1978. Connie Golden purchased the magazine in 1978. The word “The” was dropped and we became simply Speedhorse. In September of 2010, the Bachelors purchased Speedhorse.
Many things happened during the Golden’s tenure, including publication of the book The Nicodemus Era; printing the Prominent Sires poster that goes back to the Darley Arabian; beginning publication of the Thoroughbred Times in 1979; and the purchase of Eastex. The Goldens, along with a group of dedicated horsemen, rescued and purchased Eastex, who was retired from racing after a stall accident but was found wearing racing plates near
the Mexican border. Eastex was a 2-time Champion and the all-time leading money earning 2 year old for 27 years.
The Golden’s era ended when the Bachelors purchased Speedhorse in 2010, and a new era was ushered in.
