tube horse, a colt created by intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Debbie Schauf was named executive director of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association. Rillito Park, known as the birthplace of Quarter Horse racing,
was honored with an AQHA Historical Marker. 2-time World Champion Refrigerator, AQHA’s richest Quarter Horse with over
$2 million for owner Jim Helzer, retired. A winning 7-year-old TB mare, who shattered her leg less than a month from foaling, became just the 13th horse ever to get a prosthetic
leg. World Champion Down With Debt retired from racing. Churchill Downs honored African-American jockey William Walker,
who was born into slavery and went on to win the third Kentucky Derby on Baden Baden
in 1877. Corona Cartel, the current all-time leading living sire of money earners, won his first race in the Kindergarten Futurity-G1. Los Alamitos held its first ever Wiener Nationals benefitting the non-profit Seal Beach Animal Care Center, the 22nd consecutive running
of which was held in 2017, raising more
than $250,000 over the years. AQHA hired Michael Cusortelli as racing information coordinator. Former jockey and harness driver William Huff got his wish for his 107th birthday when Stan and Cheri Richards brought their 20-year-old palomino to the nursing home for Huff to ride. A granite memorial was dedicated to Dash For Cash
at the AQHA Heritage Center & Museum. Picov Downs was honored with an AQHA Historical Marker commemorating 25 years of AQHA-approved racing. In Memoriam: Newt Keck, trainer of World Champions Goetta and Mr Jet Moore and Champion Pokey Bar, passed away at 83; Owner/breeder Jens L. List Jr., who established Double Bar S Ranch in California, passed away at the age of 57; 2-time World Champion Dash For Cash, 23, was euthanized due to complications of equine protozoal encephalomyelitis (EPM); Mexico Champion The Prize died while undergoing surgery to repair a broken sesamoid.
1997
Dashing Folly was named 1996 World Champion. The first female trainer/jockey
team of Donna McArthur and Tami Purcell
won the Champion of Champions with World Champion Dashing Folly. Clayton Keys was named general manager at Heritage Place. Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie opened. The National Barrel Horse Association held their first annual barrel racing industry conference, with a focus
to nationalize the sport. The AQHA began recognizing races in which Quarter Horses compete against other breeds at AQHA-approved distances. A Thoroughbred and an Appaloosa finished in a dead-heat for the first time to win
1998
SLM Big Daddy was named 1997 World Champion. Gary Beszantz donated $220,000 to the United Pegasus Foundation to purchase a 40-acre ranch for unwanted or rescued horses and those injured at racetracks. Ed Allred purchased the remaining 25% interest in Los Alamitos to become the sole owner of the track. The AQHA Racing Challenge program added a distance race to the series. California began
a “Save The Horses” campaign to ban the sale of horses for slaughter. Orlando Gutierrez was promoted to director of publicity for Los Alamitos. AQHA unveiled its 21st historical marker commemorating Blue Ribbon Downs. Various racing associations
and horsemen’s groups in California joined together to form a new political action committee known as the Night Horse Racing Committee to protect the interests of the night racing industry. Sunland Park began construction on a casino. Connie Hall became the 10th overall and 1st female trainer to saddle 500 QH winners at Los Alamitos. In Memoriam: Robert W.
