2016
Heza Dasha Fire was named 2015 World Champion. The Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders’ Association celebrated its 50th anniversary. Sunland Park suspended live racing for 2 weeks due to an outbreak of EHV-1. Sharon, Rhonda and Dawn List
of Double Bar S Ranch LLC joined Dr.
Ed Allred and Dr. Steve Burns and John Andreini as partners for the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Turf Paradise celebrated 60 years of racing. Ray Willis was elected chairman
of the New Mexico Racing Commission. Texas A&M veterinarian Dr. Dickson Varner was awarded the David E. Bartlett Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Theriogenology and the American College of Theriogenologists. Northlands Park in Canada announced it would cease operations at the end of the year. Rillito Park began sending
out a signal of its races for the first time. The California Horse Racing Board approved a rule prohibiting clenbuterol in test samples. The Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association inducted their first members
into their Hall of Fame. Melodie Knuchell, director of nominations and simulcasting
at Los Alamitos and vice president of the
Race Track Chaplaincy of America at the track, received the Sam Thompson Award
for leadership in the racing community.
The Arizona Dept. of Agriculture imposed
a 21-day quarantine on the Turf Paradise stable area after a horse was euthanized with EHV-1. The Multiple Medication Violation System was temporarily suspended after the AQHA Executive Committee determined it appropriate to conduct a thorough evaluation of the program. Ismael “Izzy” Trejo was named executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission. Sunland Park broke ground
for a $7 million hotel project. The Alberta government announced a 10-year agreement to continue funding the horse racing industry. Les Bois Park closed in Idaho. In Memoriam: The great barrel horse Firewater Fiesta, a 2-time AQHA Barrel Horse of the Year, died; 2-time Champion Noconi died from laminitis at 11; Leading broodmare Oh La Proud, one of only three mares to ever produce three Champions, died at 30.
2017
Jessies First Down was named 2016 World Champion. We saw the sale of Ruidoso Downs
to Stan Sigman, John Andreini, Narciso “Chicho” Flores and Johnny Trotter and their new ownership group All American Ruidoso Downs LLC (AARD) and All American Ruidoso Horse Sales LLC (AARHS). Their mission is to ensure the integrity of Ruidoso Downs’ racing and to create
a level playing field for all horses, trainers and owners. First Down Dash, the all-time leading sire by money earned, became the all-time leading sire of winners. Debbie Schauf, Ross Brigden and Dr. Larry Findley were elected to the AQHA Racing Committee. A Quarter Horse track has been proposed for Kentucky, including barn facilities, entertainment center, and grandstand. Two-time Champion and the #3 all-time leading sire of money earners, Mr Jess Perry was laid to rest after a battle with laminitis. You can see the complete 2017 Year In Review on page 146.

Who will be named 2017 World Champion? By
the time this issue reaches your door, the 2017 Champions will have been announced, and we congratulate all the connections for their hard work and dedication to this sport that we love. Speedhorse is looking forward to another great year celebrating 50 years covering Quarter Horse racing. We wish you good luck and abundant blessings in 2018. As Frank Sinatra would say, the best is yet to come!
