Sunland Park Winter Futurity-G2
WASTING NO CORONA
by Tracy Gantz
Not too many owners can win a graded race at age 17. Anna Crowson of Midland, Texas, not only won the Dec. 28 Sunland Park
Winter Futurity-G2, she did it with a horse that she selected out of the 2011 Texas Quarter Horse Association yearling sale.
“I liked the way he looked in his stall—he looked amazing,” Crowson said.
The yearling, Wasting No Corona, cost $13,500 and has now earned $119,254.
Seventeen-year-old Anna became inter- ested in horses at about age 11, when her parents, Dennis and Norma Crowson, began buying racehorses.
“My dad went to Oklahoma and bought two,” she said. “The next year he bought 13.”
Dennis Crowson said the family’s stable has grown to 31 racehorses.
“We have 17 in training at Sunland, three recuperating, and 11 yearlings,” said Dennis.
The family ran one-two in the Winter Futurity. Wasting No Corona defeated Ramblin Cartel, who runs in the name of Crowson Racing.
“It didn’t matter who won because it’s
all in the family,” said Dennis. “After they both qualified, I said we could run one-two. They’re both good horses. We supplemented them to the Winter Futurity—it was a bit of a gamble.”
That gamble paid off. Wasting No Corona won his trial by 1 1/2 lengths to be the second-fastest qualifier. Ramblin Cartel finished second in his trial to fastest-qualifier ICU Deity and qualified fifth.
ICU Deity brought a two-race winning streak into the final and went off as the 3-2 favorite. But no one was good enough to challenge the Crowson duo.
Before the start, Izoro in post five reared in the gate. Wasting No Corona in post six was unfazed and broke quickly when the
gate opened, just behind Jess Makin Waves. Jockey Esgar Ramirez hustled Wasting No Corona right to the front, and there they remained throughout the 400 yards. Anna’s horse defeated her parents’ runner by a length in :19.079. Ramblin Cartel held onto second by a length.
“After he broke out of the gate, he just kept going,” said Anna. “He’s got heart.”
Victor Rodriguez-Flores trains both geld- ings for the Crowson family.
“He’s an up-and-coming young trainer,” said Dennis. “He works hard.”
Rodriguez-Flores reported that Wasting No Corona came back well after the Winter Futurity final.
“We’ll give him a little break now before the West Texas Derby,” said the trainer. “He’s really a nice horse and very sound too.”
It took Wasting No Corona several tries before he could win a race, but he turned out to have a good excuse.
“He qualified for the Harrah’s Futurity and ran fourth,” said Dennis. “Then we put him in a few other races and found he couldn’t go very far. We scoped him and discovered he had a breathing problem.”
A minor surgical pro-
cedure corrected that. The
Crowsons gave him time and
brought him back at Lone Star Park in the fall. He ran third and second in a couple of trials and won a maiden race prior to his Winter Futurity trial.
Bob and Jerry Gaston bred Wasting No Corona in Texas from Its Stoli Time, who was unplaced in her only start. Wasting No Corona is the mare’s first foal and first starter. Its Stoli
Time is a half-sister to stakes winners Wasting No Cash, Generating Cash, and Timeless Favorite, plus four stakes-placed horses. The second dam, Wasting No Time, is a full sister to Champion Sixy Chick.
Oscar Rincon piloted Ramblin Cartel (Carters Cartel-Ima Ramblin
Girl) to second for the Crowsons and Rodriguez- Flores. The gelding had won one race and finished second three times in six previous starts in 2012.
Speed Regard (Chicks Regard-Better In Relief) fin- ished third for jockey Jaime Leos after running second
in her trial. Juan Gonzalez trains the filly for owner Luis Daniel Valenzuela.
Completing the field were (Wave Carver-Jess Genuine), ICU Deity (FDD Dynasty-ICU Shazoom), Im
Rowdy James (Ivory James-Eyes Especially Rare), Winners Adversary (Winners Award-Wicked Adversary), Obamano (Oak Tree Special-Red Tomacita), Izoro (First Down Dash-Im Tailored Too), and Scoot With Da Loot (Heza Motor Scooter-Phoebe Wallingford).
