Robert Gentry
Robert Gentry Passes Away
Robert “Bob” Gentry passed away at the age of 81 on Jan. 7. Gentry, who was born near Lubbock, Texas, attended what is now Texas Tech University. As business partners, he and his brother Bruce, were involved in the oil industry and operated a beer distributorship. The Gentry Bros. raised horses for over 30 years and are on the all-time leading breeder list, with their horses earning over $5.6 million. Bob himself was a 40-year breeder, with his horses earning over $3.2 million, including Cham- pions Cash Legacy, Deelish and Fredricksburg. The Gentry Bros. were part of the group in the 1960s that bought the Haymaker Sale Co. in Oklahoma City, turning it into what is now Heritage Place. Robert Gentry was an AQHA Director, an AQHA director-at-large, and served on the AQHA Racing Committee. He was awarded the AQHA Racing Council Special Recognition Award in 2003. The Gentry-owned mare Fredaville and the Gentry- bred gelding Rollickin Red are both nominated for the 2012 Champion Awards.
Los Al 2011-2012 Meet Ends
Los Alamitos ended its 153-night 2011-2012 mixed meet Dec. 23 with account wagering increasing 13.1% to an average single night figure of $408,519. Total handle for all sources reached $193,645,318. The leading Quarter Horse owner title went to Ed Allred, who won 47 races. The leading Quarter Horse trainer was Paul Jones with 113 winners, and the leading Quarter Horse jockey was Cruz Mendez with 170 winners. Los Alamitos started their 2012-2013 mixed meet Dec. 28.
Los Al Declares Meet Leaders
Los Alamitos declared their 2011-2012 meet leaders. San Gregorio Racing Stables and Jose & Gustavo De La Torres’ One Dashing Eagle (One Famous Eagle-One Sweet Dash) was named Horse of the Meet, 2-Year-Old of the Meet and 2-Year-Old Colt of the Meet. One Dashing Eagle was also the winner of the Race of the Meet, the Golden State Million Futurity. Jockeys Autograph Harding Fine Art Cards
Quarter Horse jockeys at Los Alamitos on Dec. 15 signed their fine art collectable trading cards. Jockeys Roy Baldillez, Danny Cardoza, Cody Jensen and Charlie Smith visited with fans, and retired rider John Kanis joined the group to reminisce with friends. The jockey trading cards are part of Ginny Harding’s on-going series. Only 1,000 cards of each jockey are made, and the fea- tured jockeys sign them at tracks across the coun- try to aid their fellow injured riders. So far funds raised from the cards have helped the families of Mark Villa, Tad Leggett and Jacky Martin.

Hialeah Cancels Christmas Eve Card
Hialeah Park cancelled the remainder of their Christmas Eve card after the third race was declared a no contest following an equipment malfunction.
