Sonny Vaughn experienced what could have been a life ending medical event this past Christmas Eve, but in true Sonny Style, he stayed tough
& our prayers helped him through. According to all of his medical team (and his granddaughter stationed in Japan who performs these surgeries), Sonny experienced a true Christmas Miracle. He & his family & friends rode a rollercoaster of emotions beginning Christmas Eve when a very
ill Sonny agreed to go to the Emergency room with apparent heart problems. Subsequent tests proved additional and more severe problems from a suspected leak in his intestines. Scheduling an emergency surgery on Christmas Eve was an obstacle which turned into a blessing when it brought him to the able hands of a Christian surgeon named Greenway and some nurses who gave him more time on life support than was considered standard medical procedure. While his daughter, Toni, held
his hand, refusing to let him slip away, she told the medical team “Sonny Vaughn” stories hoping to convince them that her Daddy had always lived on his own terms and had what it took to overcome this. After 12 hours
in ICU, with no response, the Drs. began to remove the numerous tubes and hoses & left Toni & her father alone-but Sonny’s color improved & his chest began to rise & fall on it’s own. “My dad is breathing!” Toni reported to the staff. They were puzzled, ran more tests & moved him to a private room, then 8 hours later, he opened his eyes. Toni stayed up all night with him noting his changes to nurses who had been instructed to administer only ‘comfort care.’ His surgeon was asked to come in for a re-assessment on Wed. morning & entered Sonny’s room (of seemingly hysterical nurses) asking “So how are you doing?” Sonny’s raspy voice was heard for the first time in 40 hours as he responded “I’ve been better!”
The surgeon began giving orders to prepare him for a second surgery & there were warnings that his heart was still very weak & unstable. Again, Sonny faced a medically necessary surgery from which he might not survive. His daughter asked Sonny, “Dad, you’ve been trying so hard on your own, are you willing to let them take a chance & try something to save you?” “Uh huh” was Sonny’s clearly audible response & the staff rejoiced at what they recognized as a true miracle.
As they waited, Toni held the phone to Sonny’s ear so his grand children could wish him well. One notable call was from
a fellow horseman, Shawn Lindsey, who had always agreed to handle Sonny’s mares & babies through his frequent health issues. Shawn offered up his plan to move all of the horses off Sonny’s ranch where neighbors were busy busting ice & feeding as best they could through the Christmas Holiday. Sonny responded “thank you for all of your efforts.”
Sonny’s grandson & son-in-law came up from Louisiana as he was released from ICU to visit him & help with the cattle & horses. They were told by the staff that Sonny had experienced a true Christmas Miracle.
Sonny expresses his appreciation to his church family & all
his many friends, neighbors & family members. Especially those who will honor his wishes to place his racing quarter horses in the hands of those who can best continue the successful bloodlines of his AQHA Hall of Fame Horse REFRIGERATOR!
