Poutn On The Wagon was just that throughout his 2-year-old season in 2016, reflecting well on his native country of Canada and resulting in his being named Canadian Champion.
Pete Schoeler of 108 Mile Ranch in British Columbia bred Poutn On The Wagon in Alberta. He had raced the gelding’s dam, multiple graded stakes winner Poutnlori, a daughter of Okey Dokey Dale, and he bred
her to PYC Paint Your Wagon to get Poutn On The Wagon. The mare has also produced stakes winners Poutnokey and Poutn With Speed, both bred by Schoeler.
Poutn On The Wagon started six times, all at Lethbridge and all with Ricardo Moreno in the irons.
Trainer William Leech entered Poutn On The Wagon in the trials to the Alberta Bred Futurity for his racing debut. Breaking eighth, Poutn On The Wagon made a huge move to win the 300-yard trial by a half-length.
In the final, Poutn On The Wagon broke better, in second, and again finished well to defeat favored Caraves Waves by a half-length in a time of :15.300.
The two met again in the trials for the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity-G3. Once again Caraves Waves went favored. This time Poutn On The Wagon led almost throughout the 400 yards to qualify the fastest in :19.668 and beat Caraves Waves by 1 1/2 lengths.
Bettors sent Poutn On The Wagon off at
2-5 in the final, with Caraves Waves passing the race. The result was never in doubt as Poutn On The Wagon came home on top by an easy three- quarters of a length.
Poutn On The Wagon was odds-on again
for his Sport of Speed Sale Futurity trial. He and Moreno put on another show, the winning margin this time a length. The time of :17.990 for 350 yards made him easily the fastest qualifier.
Closing out his excellent season, Poutn On The Wagon was favored at 1-2 for the final. He did not disappoint his backers, winning by a half-length in :17.659.
