Regional Racing Awards
Regional racing awards will be presented on an annual basis to horse/owner, breeder and trainer in five regions. Regional awards will be determined by the following system:
a) Horse/owner per region based on APHA
Honor Roll points (see Rule RA-060.D1);
b) Breeder and trainer will be based on total money
earned in that region—the five regions are: Northwest (WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, ND, SD, UT), Eastern (MI, KY, FL), Central (OK, CO), Southwest (TX, AZ, NM, CA) and Canada. Winner must be a current APHA member
to receive their award. Regional awards will be presented at the 2019 January Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale.
Information on Double-Registered Horses
If your American Paint Horse will also be registered with the American Quarter Horse Association,
be sure to select a name that is acceptable at both registries at the time of registration. If you plan to race, ALL double-registered horses must be named the same at APHA and AQHA. The horse WILL NOT be allowed to race AT ALL if the names are not the same.

The photo on page 234 shows World Champion/2-time Champion Merganser after his victory in the 1988 Sun Country Futurity-G1 at Sunland Park under jockey Jacky Martin. Merganser (Duck Dance TB-Hug Tiny, tiny’s Gay) was bred by McKinnerney/Doering/Shaw and was owned by Ronald Shalz and Jerry Wells, who purchased him for $9,000 as a yearling at the 1987 Select Sale in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Trained by AQHA Hall of Fame trainer Jack Brooks, Merganser began his career on the track at two and raced until he was six years of age.
In those four years, the talented colt earned a race record of 23-13(4)-3-2 racing at Sunland Park, Ruidoso Downs, Blue Ribbons Downs and Remington Park. With $1,373,704 in lifetime earnings, Merganser won the 1988 All American Futurity-G1, Rainbow Futurity-G1, Sun Country Futurity-G1 and the West Texas Futurity-G2.
He was named 1988 World Champion, Champion Two Year Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. He also received his AQHA Superior Race Horse title that same year, an award given to horses who have acquired 200+ racing points in their career.
From 10 crops to race, Merganser is the sire of over $1.8 million in earners, including his top race money earner Ducky Fred, a multiple Graded stakes winner of $366,172. Merganser is also a top sire in the arena, including 2005 AQHA World Champion Open Senior Pole Bender/2005 AQHA World Champion Amateur Pole Bender The Money Merger.
