LA VENCEDORA
by Tracy Gantz
Heritage Place graduates dominated the major stakes at Remington Park on April 22. Not only did Apollitical Scout, an
$18,000 buy in 2015, win the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby-RG3, but La Vencedora, who cost only $12,000 the follow- ing year, took the $913,850 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity-RG2.
Remington Park held trials for the futurity over two days, April 7-8. La Vencedora par- ticipated in the second day of trials, and she won in the fastest time for that day, :17.011 for 330 yards. It was the filly’s first victory.
In her racing debut, she finished third in a maiden race.
In the final, Hez Our Prize went off as the 13-10 favorite after the scratch of fastest- qualifier EOS A Political Win. Bettors made La Vencedora the 9-1 fourth choice.
James Flores piloted La Vencedora, and the pair came out on top when the gate opened. La Vencedora and Eagle Jazz battled heads apart throughout the race, but La Vencedora remained in front, the margin a head at the wire. She completed the 330 yards in :16.760, earning a 90 speed index.
Terry McLean, who purchased La Vencedora at the 2016 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, owns the filly who was trained by John
Weghorst for the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity final.
Bobby D. Cox bred La Vencedora in Oklahoma and consigned her to the Heritage Place sale. The filly is by Ivory James,
a stallion Cox raced in partnership and continues to co-own with E. H. and Sylvia Shaw Pitman.
La Vencedora is out of
winner Jess Shakem, who has produced 100% money earners from 12 starters, including California Hi-Point Aged Stallion/New Track Record setter Jumpn Shake, and stakes placed An Agitator, Meserret and Stevie Six. La Vencedora is her top earner.
The bottom line is impressive since the second dam, Shake Em Six, was the 1996 Broodmare of the Year. Shake Em Six’s foals included Champion and Mexican Triple Crown winner Shake The Bank. Shake Em Six also produced Grade 1 winner Royal Shake Em.
Juan Medina’s homebred Eagle Jazz (One Dashing Eagle-Baja Jazz) finished second. Agustin Silva has piloted the gelding in all
three of his lifetime starts. Eagle Jazz first turned
in a 3/4-quarter-length maiden score, followed by a 1/2-length win in his futu- rity trial. He is trained by R.L. Robinson.
Hez Our Prize (Hez Our Secret-PYC Oh Whatta Rose) ran third, 3/4-length behind Eagle Jazz and a head in front of The Only Knockout. Daniel Torres
rode the gelding, who had also won both of his previous starts. Clinton Crawford trains Hez Our Prize for owner Preston Cloud, and the owner and trainer returned in the next race to take the Remington Park Oklahoma- Bred DerbRG3 with Apollitical Scout.
Completing the field were The Only Knockout (Apollitical Jess-Adolph Tres Knockout), Political Attraction (Apollitcal Jess-Gunsight Peak), My Southern Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Southern Fling), Double Eagle (One Dashing Eagle-A Southern Gal), Returning Motion (High Rate Of Return- Brimmers Motion) & DF AJ Green Leaves (Apollitical Jess-Three Green Leaves). EOS A Political Win scratched.
