It’s hard enough to win one World Championship. To do it twice is an amazing accomplishment, yet that’s exactly what PF
Chief Runnin Bear did in 2011. The gelding, who was named World Champion in 2009 as a 3-year-old, overcame a troubled year in 2010 to return nearly perfect in 2011.
“He really shined as a 3-year-old...that was his first World Championship. We brought him back for his 4-year-old year and he just wasn’t performing,” said Brande Koltiska, whose mother, Sherry, owns PF Chief Runnin Bear in partnership with Lynn and Betty Bettinger. “We were worried. He’d get out there and run about 100 yards and he’d just kind of stop. We decided he was a World Champion the year before, and he didn’t really owe us anything. We just needed to give him the rest. We turned him out and it worked.”
PF Chief Runnin Bear returned nearly perfect in 2011, finishing third and fourth in his first two starts before going on a five-race winning streak and setting two track records for trainers Judd Kearl and Leslie Padilla. His accomplishments are blessing to his owners, who bought him as a long yearling to “have some fun” and take advantage of the good purses for Paint racing in Oklahoma.
“It’s funny because Lynn and my mom and Betty talk almost every day on the phone,” said Koltiska. “It’s not just about the horse anymore. It’s a long lasting friendship now.
“It’s a blessing, really,” she continued. “Not just the joy he has brought to us, but to all of our family. Anybody who is around him falls in love with him. He’s such a ham. He doesn’t act like a racehorse. You can send kids into his stall and they wrap their arms around him, he’s so gentle. At racetime, he turns into something totally different.”
What PF Chief Runnin Bear has turned into is a two-time World Champion who will be looking for a three-peat in 2012. According to Koltiska, PF Chief Runnin Bear is getting ready for the upcoming meet at Remington Park, where he will begin to defend his 2011 World Championship crown.
PC Chief Runnin Bear’s five-race winning streak included the Colors Of The Wind Stakes at Retama Park.
