AMCCCCM Classic
FROM ARIZONA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The Classic in honor of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen (AMCCCCM) is the second Triple Crown jewel for three-year-old horses of this fast breed. The first race – the Easily A Possum Classic – was contested on March 12, with Ponte Trucha winning in a photo finish with the filly Jess Call Me Angel. Both horses also participated in the AMCCCCM Classic held on May 14, running 400 yards with a purse of $278,200 pesos ($15,466 U.S. approx.).
There were six horses entered, paying $33,000 pesos ($1,835 U.S. approx.), all of them with experience at this level of racing. Ponte Trucha received the betting preference, followed by Alfa Edy SJ and Jess Call Me Angel.
After riders and horses took their positions
at the gate, the start was good, although Ponte Trucha (#6) moved toward the outside rail, where he ran the entire race. SE Corona Cruzin (#1) led until he was caught by Jess Call Me Angel (#2); but in the final yards the filly From Arizona (#4) passed them with a great stride, making a good finish under the direction of Mario Alberto López Marmolejo to prevail by 1/2-length.
From Arizona finished her
course in :19.82 for a speed
index of 85, crediting her
record with the second win in
four starts at this track. This
is her second classic in her
still brief career, since on Feb.
26 she authoritatively won the
Maiden Stakes with authority
(see report in Speedhorse,
April issue pages 214 - 215).
For this win she added to her
earnings $139,100 pesos ($7,733 U.S. approx.).
The winner is the property of Rancho Las Gaviotas, owned by Alfredo Rabanal Salinas, who was also responsible for her training. Accompanied by his son Alfredo Joshua, they welcomed her
into the winner’s circle where they received the awards, together with the other members of
the Rabanal Cárdenas Family and their team, presented by Adriana Gómez Barnola, Manager
of the AMCCCCM, and José Mauricio Dorantes, Operations Manager of the Las Américas.
From Arizona was bred in the United States by Edward C. Allred, by leading sire Favorite
Cartel and out of the producing mare Kingman Kin (by Raise A Secret). As she passed through
the Los Alamitos Equine Sale 2021, she was bought by Alejandro Castañeda and was later acquired by Rancho Las Gaviotas in a private deal with Tabasco Racing LLC.
“I was worried about the distance of the classic (400 yards) because of
the physique of the filly, but with her class and her heart she gave me the confidence
to enter her. I really liked the handling by her jockey, Mario Alberto López, because
he managed her very well and gave her time to reach the distance and win the race,” expressed a satisfied Alfredo Rabanal Salinas, who later also enjoyed a triumph by Cartel Sixes in the Revelation Classic.
Ridden by César Guadalupe Cervantes, the filly Jess Call Me Angel (One Sweet Jess-Im Game Lets Play) finished second. She is owned
