We heard from trainers, veterinarians, regulators, and other industry players, and the desire of our racing membership is unambiguous.

In my most recent column, I invited members of our racing community to join me in Ruidoso for the Racing Council meeting on Aug. 15. I’m happy to report that many of you took me up on that offer, and we wrapped up a lively discussion with a clear and concise message for our leadership: fight the proposed Horse Racing Integrity Act.
As many of you know, I have been vocal in my concern about extended federal oversight in horse rac- ing – a concern I know that I share with thousands of horsemen around the country. This week, the Racing Council and I were afforded the opportunity to hear from many of you.
We heard from trainers, veterinarians, regula-
tors, and other industry players, and the desire of
our racing membership is unambiguous. We share an apprehension of the federal government’s ability to ef- fectively regulate horseracing, and we worry about the inhumane effects of losing race-day Lasix. And, most importantly of all, we plan to lead the fight.
Know that AQHA leadership hears you
and will stand up for your interests, but we will
need everyone’s help. We’ll begin serious discussions as to our plan of action soon, and I’ll keep you apprised of the details as they take shape.
Be aware that there will be a financial investment re- quired to fight this fight. We may be reaching out to our membership for support in AQHA’s legislative efforts.
On a personal note, we are all deeply saddened by the recent and unexpected loss of our Racing Council Chair, Debbie Schauf, and her absence was felt greatly during this meeting. Her knowledge of the industry and dedication to horsemen was second to none. And, while Debbie will be missed for a long, long time, we are proud to announce that her good friend Russell Harris was elected to the Racing Council Chair.
The Racing Council also began discussions about our upcoming AQHA Racing Conference this fall to coincide with the Challenge Championships at the Downs at Albuquerque. I’m proud to say that I think we’ll have another robust program this year.
During the Oct. 25 Racing Committee meeting, look for engaging topics that pertain to medication issues, regula- tory issues, program trainers, and other subjects of inter- est. And those of you who support your local affiliates may be interested in joining our Affiliate Workshop on Oct. 24.
The complete schedule of events is provided in this magazine or at AQHA.com. So please mark your calendars and join us in Albuquerque.
See you soon!
