Q. OF ALL THE HORSES YOU’VE COME ACROSS, ARE THERE ANY THAT HAVE STOOD OUT AS BEING PARTICULARLY IMPRESSIVE? IF SO, WHO AND WHY?
A. Spit Curl Diva. I purchased her when she finished racing after her 3-year-old season. I then sold half of her to Dr. Jill Mixer, and we raced her as a four and five year old. During that time, she was a three-time Champion and set track records at five different distances. She
won three Grade 1 stakes, including the Refrigerator Handicap, where she beat (World Champion)
Stolis Winner. She also raced in the Champion of Champions. She has foaled many outstanding runners, including Coronas First Diva, who was the 2016
AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. If it wasn’t for an unfortunate injury after her 5-year-old racing season, she would have raced at least one or two more years. She is one of the best mares to ever run in our industry.
Q. THE FUTURE OF QUARTER HORSE RACING AND HORSE RACING, IN GENERAL, IS ALWAYS A HOT TOPIC. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MEASURES NEED TO BE TAKEN
TO ENSURE THE FUTURE GROWTH AND PROSPERITY OF THE SPORT?
A. “We need to continue working to create a fair racing environment for everyone involved through hair testing and other means of drug testing. We must make sure our owners, breeders, jockeys, trainers and bettors are competing on a fair playing field. I think we also must work together to make our industry as affordable as possible. This includes working hard on increasing purses.
Q. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO MAY WANT TO GET INVOLVED PROFESSIONALLY IN THE HORSE RACING INDUSTRY?
A. Find someone who has experience in the horse racing industry and has been successful. Learn as much as possible from them before investing too much, and don’t be afraid to begin in the industry by partnering on your horses. Study bloodlines and get the right trainer. Finally, make sure you understand the finances of the race horse industry.
