Mexico Futurity Consolation
CORONA SOLA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The race for the consolation prize of the Mexico Futurity was contested among eight of the ten who qualified for this bout after AS Perla Negra and BR Jess Runner were scratched. The prize in dispute was $341,837 pesos (approxi- mately $17,745) to be distributed from first to fifth place, a figure that corresponds to 6% of the total purse raised for the futurity.
It was a clean race from start to finish, free of any bumps or interference, so there was no doubt that the winner, Corona Sola, was the best, especially considering that she ran the 250 yards in :12.88 for a 104 speed index; leaving in second place the “entry” formed by Sola Latina and One Gavilán. The three aforementioned are all breeding products of Cuadra La Presita, each by a different stallion.
It was rider Leonardo Vidaña who was responsible for conducting the winner on the track, a sorrel filly that belongs to Rancho El Suspiro, prepared by trainer Guadalupe García “Lupillo” and saddled for this event by Gonzalo Bastida Pacheco.
The daughter of Senior Solo via Corona Dot Com (by Corona Cartel) was consigned to the 2018 Select Yearling Auction, quoted at $300,000 pesos (approximately $15,380 US) when presented in the ring where she was acquired for Rancho El Suspiro, based in the
State of Chiapas in southeast of Mexico.
She reached this competi- tion after having participated in the qualification/elimina- tion races, where she came in second place behind Jabulani Dash. Her time of :13.24 gave her the seventh best time of the ten that went on to the consolation, a race in which she was ridden by Leonardo Vidaña of Rancho El Suspiro.
In this way, she breaks her “maiden” and earns from this race $170,918 pesos (approxi- mately US $8,872).
The presentation ceremony was led by
the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, A.C., and was attended by Antonio Lobeto Tamez and received by Juan Baldovinos, father and son, representing Rancho El Suspiro, as well as Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán, breeder of the winner and owner of Cuadra La Presita.
Second place went to Sola Latina, a daughter of Senior Solo out of Shes A Toll, by Ought To Be First, who was led by Mario Alberto López Marmolejo. She belongs to Cuadra Santa Cruz and was saddled by trainer Víctor Jarillo Sánchez.
Arriving in third place was One Gavilán (Bullish One-Platinum Cash, by Separatist) under the guid- ance of the experienced rider José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. Like Sola Latina, he belongs to Cuadra Santa Cruz and was therefore saddled by Víctor Jarillo Sánchez.
The other participants finished in the follow-
ing order: Isa Fearless Boy
(Fearless Fritz–Isa Party Girl), Succy C First (First Dinastia–Feature Miss Susie), Proud One Eyed (Fearless Fritz–Proud Corrina), Aquiles Native GC (Native Jewel DH–Ticket To Anywhere) and Felina Horse (Sea Horse Corona–Feminine Feline).
