Jess Good Candy Wins The 2015 All American Futurity
Good Reason SA, sire of Jess Good Candy, winning the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1.
Jess Send Candy, the dam of Jess Good Candy.
When Jess Good Candy crossed the finish line first in the 2015 All American Futurity-G1, it was a sad but sweet victory for the Carl Pevehouse family as
Carl had passed away before he could see his homebred fulfill his All American Dream.
Carl Pevehouse started breeding racehorses in the 1970’s and as time went on, the foals started showing up with “candy”
in their name. The candy theme came about when Carl named one of his mares Send Me Candy. This name idea came to him when he was at a track and he heard a man say, “Send me the candy!” which was a euphemism for send me the money. Send Me Candy (Tiny’s Gay-Dough Gal, Moon Dough) was the foundation of what today is Carl’s “Candy” horses. She is the third dam of Jess Good Candy (Good Reason SA-Jess Send Candy, Mr Jess Perry).
When Carl passed away, his widow Rozella brought trainer Clint Crawford in
to look at the colts. He found Jess Good Candy and, along with some other praise, told Rozella, “You want your horse to go to the mountain? This is the one you want. He is the one.” So, Jess Good Candy went to Ruidoso to bring home the candy with a win in the All American Futurity.
Crawford started Jess Good Candy at Remington Park, breaking his maiden in April. He then went to the “mountain” to start in the Ruidoso Futurity trials, which he won but didn’t qualify for the finals. He did qualify for the Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational, but he
passed on that race. Then they found a splint that required some treatment and rest, so he skipped the Rainbow Futurity-G1 to get ready for the All American Futurity trials.
The first two legs of the All American Triple Crown saw a split between First Valiant Sign winning the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 and Tres Friends winning the Rainbow Futurity-G1 with First Valiant Sign coming in second. Another runner that had been making himself known was One Fabulous Eagle, who won his trial but was third in First Valiant Sign’s Ruidoso Futurity. He was fractious in the gate and drifted and was unable to get to the winner. He skipped the Rainbow and came back for the All American trials.
The All American trials were held on August 21-22. One Fabulous Eagle justified the wait with a win in his trial on the first day in a time of :21.452. This was the fastest time of the two days of trials. Crooked Path was next with a time of :21.541, winning his trial. TF Im That Guy won his trial with a time of :21.563. Sky Bo Dash won his trial in a time of :21.579. Giving It All had the fifth fastest time and he did it coming in second to TF Im That Guy
in their trial. First Valiant Sign was the fastest qualifier on the second day, winning his trial in a time of :21.582. Hatefulist was next with a trial win in a time of :21.596. Then, it was
Jess Good Candy with a trial win in a time
of :21.642. McClintock B was second to
Jess Good Candy in their trial with a time of :21.646 and he qualified. Lethal Volcom was

second to Hatefulist in their trial in a time of :21.654. Lethal Volcom is a full brother to JM Miracle, winner of the 2014 All American Futurity-G1.
One of the problems Jess Good Candy was creating in his races was a tendency to lug in at the start. His regular rider G. R. Carter worked with the colt but couldn’t
get him out of the tendency. Despite this problem and a slow start in the trial, Carter was able to get him going and he came on to win by a nose over McClintock B. Carter had qualified four horses for the All American
