The 2018 Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association (OQHRA) Betting On A Cure for Rein In Cancer was held June 2 at Remington Park to raise awareness and money for cancer support services in Oklahoma. The OQHRA invited guests to a buffet dinner
in the Eclipse Suite, where both a silent and live auction were held with every dollar raised going to the charitable non-profit organization Rein In Cancer to provide support to horsemen across the country and to the Shirley Bowman Nutrition Clinic at the Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City. Shorty Koger of Shorty’s Hattery in Oklahoma City established the charity in remembrance of her sister. The benevolent program gives $500 to any member of one of their supporting horseman organiza- tions who is diagnosed with cancer.
This year, a Survivor Tree and an In Memoriam Tree were placed at the entrance to the Eclipse Suite on which individuals could choose and place a ribbon with the name of either a cancer survivor or a loved one who succumbed to the disease. Multi-colored rib- bons represented brain cancer (grey ribbons), childhood cancer (gold), melanoma (black), pancreatic cancer (purple), and more. “This viscious disease is bigger than pink and so many in our racing family are in a battle for their life,” said OQHRA Executive Director Debbie Schauf. “We support them all.” The Juno’s Request Stakes, which Apollitical Scout won, was the annual race in honor of all cancer victims and survivors.
