Welcome to the annual Speedhorse Broodmare Issue! From our first broodmare issue in 1969, Speedhorse has been celebrating great producing mares in this special edition.
Inside, you will find a list of every mare that produced a stakes winner in 2011. The list is an elite one—out of 11,512 mares that were represented by at least one starter in 2011, only 403 mares produced at least one stakes winner last year! Advertisements for these special mares feature a unique logo, designating that the mare is the dam of a 2011 stakes winner.
Also inside is an in-depth study of the genetic influence of broodmares by Larry Thornton. Long- time breeders have plenty of anecdotal evidence of the mare’s influence on her foals; Larry explains the science behind the stories in this fascinating article
