All American Gold Cup-G1
BODACIOUS EAGLE
By Tracy Gantz
Bodacious Eagle is the kind of racehorse anybody would want. Owner Johnny Trotter says that the gelding has a great mind
and is incredibly sound. A multiple graded stakes winner, Bodacious Eagle was making his third attempt at the All American Gold Cup-G1 at Ruidoso Downs, and this time he grabbed the ultimate prize.
“When he gets away like that, he usually wins,” said Trotter. “He deserved that. That horse is a stone, cold racehorse. He qualified for all three futurities (at Ruidoso) as a 2 year old. Every time he’s been put in the starting gate, he’s been in against the toughest horses there are. It finally got to be his turn this time.”
With jockey Cody Jensen aboard, Bodacious Eagle went off as the fourth choice at nearly 6-1. He broke like a shot in the 440-yard Gold Cup and dominated the field. Skipping over the sealed surface, he scored by three-quarters of a length in :21.418.
“When the track got sealed, I thought it would be an advantage,” said Jensen. “The track was tighter and he likes that. We thought
we had a better advantage, and it just worked out that way.”
Bodacious Eagle earned $84,000 in the Gold Cup, raising his life-
time earnings to $969,986.
Trotter is hoping the 6-year-
old gelding can go over a million in earnings.
“He deserves to be a mil- lionaire,” the owner said.
Michael Joiner has trained
Bodacious Eagle for Trotter
throughout 2018, and the
gelding finished second in the
Mr Jet Moore Handicap-G2
and third in the Remington
Park Invitational
Championship-G1 for the
trainer. Earlier in his career,
Bodacious Eagle won such races as the 2015 Texas Classic Derby-G1 and 2015 Dash For Cash Derby-G3.
“He’s always been one of my favorites—I like him a lot,” said Trotter. “He’s never been operated on, and he has a good, strong mind.”
Trotter says Bodacious Eagle was headed to California for some races this fall. He’ll race the gelding as long as Bodacious Eagle enjoys
it. After his racing career, Bodacious Eagle will likely have a second career as a show horse and roping horse.
“He’d make a good header,” Trotter said. “He’s got the mind for it. He’s a real cool horse, and he doesn’t owe me a thing.”
The owner bought Bodacious Eagle as an embryo after bidding against Bobby Cox for Bodacious Dream, the dam of Bodacious Eagle, at the 2012 Heritage Place January Winter Mixed Sale. Cox got the mare for
$107,000, and two hip numbers later, Trotter purchased the embryo for $8,000.
At that same sale, Trotter purchased the mare Little Rebas Corona for $48,000. That mare the next year produced Famous Little Reba for Trotter. In 2015, Famous Little Reba
