Bryan Candanosa celebrates his victory aboard Tres Crystals.
Bryan Candanosa has piloted Tres Crystals in all of his races and was back aboard for
the 350-yard Heritage Place Futurity, having qualified the bay gelding in the May 5 trials as the third fastest qualifier.
Tres Crystals came out of the 6-gate on
top, battling with three horses to his inside. Approaching the wire, he had to fend off a couple of closers to his outside, but he managed to keep his nose in front the entire trip, stopping the timer in :17.852.
“I was honored to be on this horse,” said Candanosa. “He was really calm today, but once he stood in the gate, he told me he would run his race. I just trusted God.”
Logan stood proudly behind the blanket given as part of the rewards to the connections. Before Tres Crystals left the winner’s circle, Logan made sure to pat him on the head and congratulate her horse.
“I don’t have the words to express how I feel,” said Logan. “It’s unbelievable. What do I say? I feel so blessed.”
Logan has already had a horse who traveled a similar path to Tres Crystals.
EC Revenge gave Logan her first victory in the Oklahoma Futurity in 2019. However, he missed getting into the Heritage Place Futurity, instead winning the Heritage Place Juvenile. Dee Keener trained EC Revenge and also conditions Tres Crystals.
Not only was it Logan and Candanosa’s first victory in the Heritage Place Futurity, it was also a first in the race for Keener.
“All I can say is I won the Heritage Place!” said the elated trainer. “It has been a real pleasure with this horse—he is a racehorse. We’re going to take him to Ruidoso for the Rainbow and Ruidoso trials.”
It won’t be Tres Crystals’ first visit to Ruidoso. Though bred in Texas and thus far only raced in Oklahoma, he journeyed to New Mexico last year for the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Logan purchased him for $30,000 from Robicheaux Ranch as agent for Simmons Racing.
Simmons Racing bred Tres Crystals from Crystal Sola, who won the 2009 Oklahoma Juvenile Challenge-G3 and
Fair Meadows Juvenile. Crystal Sola has produced seven winners from 12 starters. She is a full sister to Champion Walk Thru Crystal and a half-sister to Mexican stakes winner One Danny, being out of stakes- winning Corona Crystal. Simmons Racing bought Crystal Sola, along with an embryo by One Famous Eagle, for $208,000 from the 6666 Ranch at the 2015 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale.
