OTTS BOY
by Tracy Gantz
It doesn’t get much bigger than the $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 for a first-ever stakes victory. That’s what Otts Boy gave to Luke and
Tari Goebel of Oakville, Texas, when he scored in the June 12 race. As much as it was a win for Luke and Tari, it was also vindication for Otto Goebel, Luke’s father, who died in 2014.
“He’s the one behind all of it,” said Luke. “He bred horses for 60 years. He knew how to do it. He just didn’t have enough money to get the job done right.”
Otts Boy, the 7-2 second choice, got the
job done in the Ruidoso Futurity. He broke extremely well and on the lead for jockey Ramon Sanchez and battled early with Getthere Fast, both from the barn of trainer Toby Keeton. Otts Boy was never headed and outran his stablemate by 1 1/4-lengths in :17.673 for 350 yards, posting an 89 speed index.
“He was out so handily that all I did was keep him focused,” said Sanchez.
