Robert and Sandy Brown share
their love for animals at SummerHill Farms in Iowa
Horse-loving city boy meets horse- loving country girl. Thanks to country girl, city boy embraces his
love for horses (and for country girl). City boy marries country girl, and they live happily ever after, raising people kids and then horse “kids.”
So goes the story of Bob and Sandy Brown of SummerHill Farms LLC in Waukee, Iowa, outside Des Moines.
But although they’ve bred and raced many successful Quarter Horse runners, their horse
operation didn’t start in earnest until around 2000, after they’d raised three children.
A self-proclaimed mom-and-pop operation, Bob and Sandy now breed just five or six mares a year and stand a homebred stud.
“I don’t pretend to have the $500,000 multiple Graded stakes-winning broodmares that the big boys have, but we try to produce quality horses that have been taken care of properly and are competitive in the Midwest market,” Bob says.
