that the care they give their horses makes them successful. “They run a top-notch operation at home,” he says. “Everything is really clean, neat and organized, and their horses are well kept and look great. As a trainer, it’s really good to get horses in that condition.”
“I think their passion makes them successful,” adds trainer Tony Jones. “Bob loves racing, and he loves his horses. Most of my clients run the Prairie Meadows meets so they prefer the Iowa-Breds, and Bob Brown is the best breeder in Iowa.
“When we go there, every one of their
horses comes up to be petted,” Tony adds.
“They’re all really good-dispositioned
horses, and they’re so much easier to handle
when you get them to the track because of
the attention the Browns give them at

“I think we treat the horses more like dogs than horses,” adds Sandy. “We’re big on imprinting them when they’re young. We’re out there every day rubbing on them and giving them treats so they’re very people friendly. We think it makes them happy and it definitely makes the trainers happy!”
Last but not least, being open to ideas and knowledge contributes to the Browns’ accomplishments. “Bob listens,” says
Butch. “He listens and he continues to learn every year. Ultimately, he makes the final decisions, but he’s very deliberate and very analytical and therefore, has a lot of success. And they’re the most personable people you could imagine. They’re a delight to be around.
Bob admits that his medical background contributes to his enjoyment of getting the babies onto the ground and watching them progress that first three to four months. “I’ve got an oxygen tank and monitors and all the emergency equipment ready to go, with cameras in the stalls that play on our TVs and my cell phone so I can track these mares when they’re getting close,” he says. “They say 95% of deliveries go uncomplicated, and that might be fine, but if you have a lot of money invested in semen and your broodmare, you want it to be 100% so we go to all lengths to make sure
“They do a great job of raising horses and along with Clint, pick the ones they want to try for various reasons,” says Butch, “—some for broodmare prospects and some that they think may have a shot at the big time, and they market a few to pay the bills. Both he and Sandy are tremendous people who love the horse business. And why not love it when
