Owned by Ernesto Palacio, Eagle Coast crossed the wire first in the 440-yard $1,008,129 Grade 1 Rainbow Derby-G1 at Ruidoso Downs on July 20. Ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. for trainer Jose Luis Muela, Eagle Coast made his 440-yard trip in :21.295, recording a career- best 97 speed index.
The fifth-fastest qualifier, Eagle Coast was coming off of a 3/4-length victory in the July 7 Rainbow Derby trials.
Eagle Coast has been raced exclusively in New Mexico. During his freshman campaign, he pocketed $234,648 from eight outs, scored
a victory in the Hobbs America Futurity-G2, and ran second in the Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1. He also finished third in the
West Texas Futurity-G2. Eagle Coast won two of his three starts at Ruidoso Downs last summer as well - a Rainbow Futurity-G1 trial in July, and an All American Futurity-G1 trial in August.
Eagle Coast was bred in Missouri by Jim Streelman and Bill Dale, and he was purchased by Palacio for $20,000 at the 2017 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding is by One Dashing Eagle and out of Coastal Candy, who ran third in the 2009 Black Gold 300 Futurity at Blue Ribbon Downs and was a finalist in the 2010 Remington Park Derby-G2. The mare has produced 100% winners from three starters.
In second was Five Bar Stoli (Five Bar Cartel-Stoli Angel) under Jose Alvarez for owner Garlyn O. Shelton, who also bred the
sorrel gelding, and trainer John Stinebaugh. Last year’s Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding Apocalyptical Jess (Apollitical Jess-Cassandra Crest) was third under Ricky Ramirez for trainer Trey Wood. The gelding currently ranks fourth on the all-time earnings list for racing Quarter Horses. Followed by Mystic Blues (Walk Thru Fire-Queens R Blue), SC Money Maker (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Spit Curl Diva), Breaking New Ground (One Dashing Eagle-Heavenly Trip), Tres Jazz
(Jess Lips-Baja Jazz), America Rules (Corona Cartel-Allamericandreamgirl), fastest qualifier Excessive Gambler (One Dashing Eagle- Excessive Theresa) and Shockinglyfamous (One Famous Eagle-Shocktime).
The $1,008,129 Rainbow Derby-G1 saw Eagle Coast (#1) cross the wire first, with Five Bar Stoli (#3) a neck back.
