MAYBELLINA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With 14 participants, the qualification races were held for this stakes reserved for two year old runners who were nominated for the AQHA Challenge Program. The top ten best times earned the right to compete in the finals with a purse of $757,480 pesos (approxi- mately $39,194 US) for 350 yards.
In the trials was the filly Maybellina, who secured the best qualifying time of :17.265 and which placed her as a favorite at the betting box with odds of 0.15. Another important reason was that the filly won the The Prize Classic by more than 4-lengths on May 5, which made her look quite superior to her rivals.
With the scratching of EC Flirtatious, the finals were disputed between nine contenders.
The start of the race was a bit disorganized, with the competitors occupying the whole width of the track. On the far left, Wavin Alibi (#2) headed inwards near the inner rail. At the other end were Political Scandal (#8) and Tempting Dude (#9), opening the lane as they moved towards the external rail, despite the effort of their jockeys. Meanwhile, Maybellina (#3) did not hesitate for a moment to make a quick escape, along with the company of the grey colt Cartel Jumpn Chic (#2), who accompanied her for approximately 200 yards. The rest of the distance was totally dominated by the filly Maybellina without pressure from her rider Israel Domínguez
Morales. She crossed the finish line 2 3/4-lengths in front of Just Eagles Girl (#7).
The time for the race
was :16.81 (SI 102), which
improves the time recorded
in the previous race by Lafishingonabugsmoon
(:16.84) in the Anselmo
Aguilar Payán Classic, which
had already surpassed the
local previous clocking of :16.86. That is to say, with a difference of 33 minutes, the local speed record for 350 yards improved twice. This result, however, must be endorsed by the corresponding authority (AQHA) in order to be official.
Maybellina, who was raised in the United States by Duke Racing LLC, is a daughter of PYC Paint Your Wagon and out of Eye Popping (by Mr Eye Opener). She was acquired as a yearling at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale by veterinar- ian Rachuán Suárez Kuri for Rancho R-H, where René Moreno trains her, but she was officially saddled by José Alfredo Rivera Hernández.
Her owner, Toribio Rivera, said, “The filly surprised us with her speed and confidence
in two match-races before officially debuting
at the Hipodromo de las Américas, where she ratified such attributes as first winning The Prize
Clasico and now the Juvenile Challenge, establishing a track record at a young age. Her next commitment will be for the Jodys Glory Classic, with the trials on August 21.”
Maybellina remains unbeaten in four outings and for this success has added gains of $348,440 pesos ($18,029 US approximately).
Her earnings already exceed $732,000 pesos. Just Eagles Girl finished in second with
Aarón Adrián Gómez as helmsman. The daughter of Freighttrain B out of Just Eagle is owned by Cuadra San José del Fresno and was saddled by Nicolás Otamendi Vivar.
In third place finished the colt Tempting Dude (Tempting Dash-Tinalicious) under the guidance of Heriberto Camacho. He belongs to Rancho El Paraíso, where Carlos Villanueva Campos trains him.
The other finalists concluded in the follow- ing order: Cartel Jumpn Chic (Jumpn Chic– Cash Cartel), Come On Tempt Me (Tempting Dash–Rebas In The House), Wavin Alibi (Wave Carver–Ima Southern Alibi), Pollitical Scandal (Apollitical Blood–Whos Kissin Who), Just Flyin In (FDD Dynasty–Strawfly Six) and Mea Dominator (Dominyun–Duck Mea Runner).
