Ruidoso Derby-G1
HOTSEMPTING
by Danny Camp
Hotsempting is hot indeed. She has won her last three in a row now, and she looks to be at the top of her game when the money is on
the line.
Her latest win came in the $887,266 Grade
1 Ruidoso Derby-G1 at Ruidoso Downs. Hotsempting broke in second from the 3-post and there was never a question.
Jockey Esgar Ramirez did a fine job of keeping his mount focused, and the pair was in the lead by the first call. At the halfway point, the pair was a 1/2-length on top, and they held that margin to the top of the stretch. They cleared a full length at the finish, crossing the wire 1-length to the good.
Hotsempting completed the 400 yards in :20.006 to earn an 87 speed index. The filly also earned the first-place check of $372,652 for owners Miguel and Mauricio Gallegos, boosting her lifetime earnings to $437,945.
Trained by Sergio Ibarra, Hotsempting’s race record now stands at 8-5(1)-0(0)-0(0),
including a fourth place finish in the 2019 Southwest Juvenile Championship-G2. He was also a finalist in last year’s Rainbow Futurity-G1 and Ruidoso
Futurity-G1. Hotsempting qualified
with the fastest time to the Ruidoso Derby-G1 in her May 24 trial, besting the field by 1 1/2-lengths in :19.945.

“She is very professional,” said Ramirez. “She has never been sore, and she doesn’t
hurt anywhere. She is easy to be around in the barn area or on the track in the morn- ings. She runs straight, and it seems like she
doesn’t even hit the ground hard enough to make a track. Hotsempting is a good gate horse, although in the derby she was kind of on the tailgate, but we got away clean. We always called her La Flaca, which means the skinny one. She’s slim made and she breaks hard, so that’s why we put a breast collar on her.
“I can’t speak for the owners, but I think there is a filly stakes about the time We might go in that one
