The photo on page 199 shows World Champion Sgt Pepper Feature (Truckle Feature-Marketina TB, Corner The Market) winning the Golden State Derby at Los Alamitos on April 12, 1981. The 1978 bay gelding was bred and owned by Tom Neff of Colorado City, Texas. Neff owned Sgt Pepper Feature until 1986, when he was purchased by a syndicate of horsemen that included trainer Bob Baffert.
Sgt Pepper Feature began his career on the track at two and raced until eight years of age. In those seven years, the gelding earned $900,240 from a race record of 62-20(13)-11(6)-8(1) winning at Los Alamitos, Bay Meadows, and Ruidoso Downs. The gelding had an 11-race win streak during his 1981-1982 season that included wins in the Golden State Futurity, Golden State Derby, Los Alamitos Derby, Laddie Handicap, and Dash For Cash Derby. The streak was one victory shy of the Quarter Horse record. He then had a 6-race win streak that included wins in the Dash For Cash Maturity, Chicado V Handicap, Los Alamitos Invitational Championships, Champion of Champions, and Z Wayne Griffin Director’s Stakes. He set a 550-yard New Track Record at Ruidoso Downs and one at Bay Meadows for 440 yards.
Sgt Pepper Feature was named the 1981 Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding, and in 1982 was the World Champion, Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding.
After his retirement in 1986, Sgt Pepper Feature lived at the Kentucky Horse Park until 2003 when he passed away after a battle with colic at the age of 25. This year’s $259,900 Golden State Derby at Los Alamitos was won by That Rico on Aug. 20.
