     CHARGER BAR
In 1986, James bought the great 1968 mare Charger Bar (Tiny Charger–La Ree
Bar, Rocket Bar) at a bankruptcy sale, along with a full sister to Jet Deck, and the dam of Merridoc, Sparkling Tip (Diamond Charge– Tiptoe Tune, Spy Song). Charger Bar ran out just short of $500,000 in her six-year race career — darn good earnings even now, but nearly unequaled in those days. The second- richest racehorse of her time, Charger Bar went on to produce 14 foals, which included 12 starters, 10 Register of Merit earners and 10 winners. Charger Bar was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2001.
Charger Bar marked the beginning of James’ partnerships with Steve Burns shortly after
Steve and Jo moved to California in fall 1987. “He let me get involved with (Charger Bar) and let me partner on a few foals out of her, which was a good kick-start for me,” Steve says.
James’ fondness for Steve and Jo stems from that relationship. So much so that he gave the Burnses half interest in Charger Bar because he so deeply appreciated the level
of care they gave her. Charger Bar died at Burns ranch in 1997 and her ashes were later scattered on the infield at Los Alamitos per Dr. Allred’s request. “Doc had owned her at one time and sold her for $750,000 thirty or so years ago,” James says. “He was sorry he sold her. He said he did everything he could to back out of that deal.”
  Markum
purchased Charger Bar, the second- richest racehorse of her time, and Sparkling Tip
in 1986 at a bankruptcy sale.
