PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1
LIVE MOONSHINE
by Danny Camp
Live Moonshine scored his first stakes victory in the $152,900 Grade 1 PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity at Remington Park on April 28.
Despite being fractious in the gates, the gelding was able to break in second under Cody Smith.
The pair were in second at the first call and took the lead by a nose at the top of the stretch.
With great determination, they refused to be overtaken and held on, outdueling RP Live Wire Dash to cross the finish line a head in front. The duo completed the 350 yard trek in :17.750 for an 84 speed index.
Live Moonshine brought home the $58,102 win- ner’s share of the purse for breeders/owners Dan and Kaye Jones and trainer Matt Whitekiller, boosting his cumulative total earnings to $79,196.
Live Moonshine now has a race record of three wins from four outs. His wins include his April 13 PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity trial where overcame a bumped start with a big rally, finishing 3/4-lengths to the good. The gelding qualified with the fastest time.
Live Moonshine also won his trial to the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Remington Park on March 11. The gelding finished fouth in those $180,100 Grade 1 finals.
The connections of breeders/owners Dan and Kaye Jones and trainer Matt Whitekiller won the American Paint Classic Futurity-G1 for the second straight year with this year’s victory with Live Moonshine. They also won it in 2017 with 2-time 2017 Champion and #1 Solid Paint Bred Honor Roll Gelding of 2017 Bully Pulpit.
Dan and Kaye Jones bred Live Moonshine out of lightly raced PRP Sedona Sunset. The mare has produced 100% money earners from three starters.
Besides Live Moonshine, PRP Sedona Sunset’s progeny also includes PRP Houdini.
Live Moonshine is the first stakes winner and top money earner in the brood.
“I qualified this horse for his first futurity,” said rider Cody Smith, who has ridden Live Moonshine in all three of the gelding’s victories.
“I took off him and Cesar Gomez rode him in the (Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity) finals. They had a little trouble in the gates and down the lane. After the race Cesar told me, ‘Hey brother, you better not take off this one again. He will make you look bad.’ Cesar was a class act. His death was devastating, but we have to move on,” the jockey continued. “Live Moonshine is chill to gallop and on race day, he knows his job. He’s a people pleaser and a smart horse.”
Trainer Matt Whitekiller offered, “This horse is a class act. He gets better every time we get him out of the stall. The death of Cesar was devastat- ing for our family, but we have to move on. We
are looking to the Speedhorse Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity for our next race.” The trials to that Grade 1 race are May 19 at Remington Park.
RP Live Wire Dash (CRM Livewire-RP Miss Reckess Dash) came into the finals undefeated with a three-for-three record and he had already won a futurity in the March 24 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 in which Live Moonshine finished fourth. RP Live Wire Dash was the odds on favorite, having won his trial to this race wire-to-wire by a length for the second-fastest qualifying time. He ran a gritty race in the finals and held on for second place money for owner Roy Kent Perkins and trainer
Ray Enlow. Regular pilot Gonzalo Gutierrez was handling the reins.
Memories Of Lil Hero (Little PYC-Memories Of Texas) also won his trial heat, which was his first official out, and was the fifth fastest qualifier. The colt ran a faster time in the finals, and that effort was rewarded with a third place check for owner Levings Racing LLC and trainer R. L. Robinson. Edwuin Lujan was handling the irons.
El Fargo (CRM Livewire-Make No Shadows) finished fourth and was followed by Wired For Sound (CRM Livewire-Ze Southern Girl) Wendells Livewire (CRM Livewire-Zoomin Moon) DTL That Kinda Girl (Eyem Showin Off-Royal Sooner Chick) Country Fly Girl (Country Quick Dash-Sheza Royal Secret) Right On The Nose (Dos Poruno-Ivory Chicklet). Ballesteros was scratched.
