Enrique Carrión Álvarez Classic
CHAI DANNY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With ten runners three years and older born in Mexico who have never won
a stakes race, the second edition of this race was held in honor of the Mexican breeder and horseman Enrique Carrión Álvarez, with a purse of $262,400 pesos ($14,177 US approxi- mately) at 350 yards on a fast track.
The group looked pretty even, however the lowest odds went to SF Shoots Flyer, AT Mis Contenta and Gallo Malvado. It was a good start and everyone moved towards the goal. Chicky Perry (#1) led the contest and stuck to the inner rail, but soon had to give in to the strength and speed of AT Mis Contenta (#4). That filly in turn gave in to Chai Danny (#5), a filly under reins of Juan Carlos García Maya and who held off Gallo Malvado (#7), beating him by a nose. It was an emotional finale that was decided by
a photo finish, with Chai Danny stopping the clock at :17.60 for an 87 speed index.
With only 13 outs, the 4-year-old chestnut filly took her record to 4-4-3. Her first win came on Oct. 30, 2016, in a 330-yard maiden. After competing in the trials for the México, Garañones and Subasta Selecta Futurities, she went to the Mexican Breeders Futurity where she qualified for the Consolation in which
she placed third. Of her four outs she had in 2017, she won twice, one of them allowing her to qualify for the finals of the Mexico Derby where she closed in fifth place.
This race is now credited as her first attempt in the 2018 season, and her win was received with great joy by the Rancho
Amecameca team. This was
also the first win for trainer
Israel Martinez Paz, who

At the award ceremony, attorney Enrique Carrión Álvarez was accompanied by his son Enrique Carrión Jr., who presented the awards to Dr. Jesús Sánchez Isidoro, owner of Chai Danny.
Originally from the State
of Veracruz, Enrique Carrión Álvarez has a long and successful career in raising racing Quarter Horses through Haras Ixbiapan and Azoom Ranch, the latter in the State of Texas. He owned the prominent runner and stallion
Azoom (Shazoom-Crystalinas), who died on March 22. Enrique Carrión Álvarez is also the breeder and owner of the AQHA Champion
3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt of 2016, EC Jet One (The Louisiana Cartel-Pretty Girl Perry). EC Jet One is currently in service
as a stallion, with his first offspring born in 2018. The $157,440 pesos
(approximately $8,507 US) winner’s share increased the bank account of Chai Danny to more than $370,000 pesos.
Gallo Malvado (Just An Old Sayin-Separate Ticket) made a spectacular closing under the command of José Manuel Cisneros to finish second. The colt belongs to Cuadra La Fattoria and was saddled by Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
The determined effort of AT Mis Contenta (Dashin Rare Form-Contenta TB) placed her in third under F. Esquivel for owner Román Suárez Urban and trainer Víctor Jarillo Sánchez.
