Canterbury Park Hall Of Fame Inductees
Canterbury Park honored their 2012 Hall
of Fame inductees at a ceremony on Sept. 1. Inductees include breeder Camelia Casby, own- ers Robert and Julie Petersen, Sheila Williams, and multiple stakes mare Glitter Star-TB. Casby has bred multiple Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stakes winners, and has won the Min- nesota Quarter Horse Futurity four times; the Petersen’s have amassed the most Quarter Horse wins and earnings in the history of Canterbury Park; and longtime racing advocate Williams served as media relations manager at Canterbury from 1994-2001.
Sweetwater Downs Ends Meet, Declares Leaders
Sweetwater Downs in Rock Springs, Wyoming, in only its second year of operation, ended their four-day meet Sept. 2 with a 29% increase in purses, an 18% increase in average field size, a 23% increase in wagering, and a 20% increase in attendance. Ron Cook Jr. was named leading trainer, and Shaundra Larsen took leading jockey honors.
Yellowstone Downs Cancels 2012 Season
Yellowstone Downs canceled their 2012 race meet, due in part to the late start of simulcast racing in the state, which was cancelled by the Board of Horse Racing in Dec. over to a budget deficit of more than $600,000 and which was just brought back to the state in mid-May. A release from Yellow- stone Downs Horse Racing Alliance president Jim Espy and director of racing Ben Carlson stated, “the funding generated from the Mon- tana Board of Horse Racing is nonexistent for this year.” This is the first time the Billings, Montana, track has cancelled racing since they began in 1997. Carlson said they expect to race in 2013.
NM Issues Vesicular Stomatitis Directive
The New Mexico Livestock Board issued
a new directive regarding Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) as the state confirms more cases of the disease, the majority of which are located in the northern portion of the state. New outbreaks are under investigation, however, in the mid and lower Rio Grande Valley. The directive states, “The organizers of all public livestock events including but not limited to rodeos, rop- ings, horse shows, fairs, jackpots, trail rides and gymkhanas will require that a health certificate (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, CVI) issued by an accredited, licensed veterinar-
ian, written within the preceding five (5) days be presented prior to entry into the event. Organizers should deny entry to any participant without the required CVI.”

A Night With The Legends At Heritage Fall Mixed Sale
The second annual A Night With The Leg- ends of American Quarter Horse Racing will be held Nov. 1 at Heritage Place in Oklahoma City, the evening before the Fall Mixed Sale. The event, which will be hosted by Heritage Place and Track Magazine, will focus on retired jockeys and will be emceed by Champion Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. Invited jockeys include Bobby Adair, Don Alli- son, Jerry Burgess, Danny Cardoza, Kenny Hart, Jerry Nicodemus, Curt Perner, Tami Purcell, Charley Smith, James Lackey and Tomey Swan.
Heritage Place Announces Inaugural TB Sale
Heritage Place announced an new Thor- oughbred Mixed Sale to be held on Dec. 8, 2012. The sale is for horses of all ages, and includes a paddock-type offering of racehorses in training. The event will be held closing weekend of the Remington Park Fall Meet and in conjunction with the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma’s annual meeting. Consignment forms will be available online.

An incorrect photo was attributed to Dejon in the Aug. 31 issue of Speedhorse. Pictured above, Dejon (Mr Jess Perry-My Dashing Lady, Dash For Cash), who will be standing the 2013 breed- ing season at Mountain States Equine in Hobbs, New Mexico. Dejon won five races and finished second in the Ghosts And Goblins Handicap.

William “Bill” Maher Passes Away
William Edmund “Bill” Maher of El Dorado, Kansas, passed away Aug. 18. Maher, 68, was well known in the Quarter Horse and Paint racing and show world. He was a race and

5 (15 oz.) cans green beans, drained
12 slices bacon
2/3 C. brown sugar 1/4 C. melted butter 7 t. soy sauce
1 1/2 t. garlic powder

Grade 1 Recipe:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place drained green beans into a 9 x 13 dish. Cook bacon in frying pan until strips are cooked enough to chop into large pieces. Sprinkle bacon on top of beans. Combine brown sugar, melted butter, soy sauce and garlic powder in a small bowl. Pour mixture over green beans & bacon. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes.
