 All AmericAn Juvenile
new mexico-bred gonna cha cha dominates Juvenile.
by Stacy Pigott
Gonna Cha Cha went wire-to-wire to win the $84,000 All American Juvenile by a neck under jockey Cody Wainscott.
Owners Dosi and Norma Alvarez, Brenda Alvarez and Debra Laney took a chance paying the $50,000 supplement
to make Gonna Cha Cha eligible for the All American Futurity-G1 trials. While the gamble didn’t pay off exactly as planned— Gonna Cha Cha didn’t qualify for the All American Futurity—the gelding did earn a spot in the $84,000 All American Juvenile and recouped $21,990 for winning the race by a neck.
In reality, Gonna Cha Cha had already earned enough to pay his way into the All American trials on his own. Trained by Juan Gonzalez, Gonna Cha Cha was undefeated through his first three starts including the $395,028 Zia Futurity-RG1, with earnings of $173,412. His connections simply dipped into his 2012 earnings to make their way into one of 26 All American Futurity trials, where Gonna Cha Cha finished second to Captain Strawfly in a non-qualifying trial.
Ridden by Cody Wainscott, Gonna Cha Cha went wire to wire in the All American Juvenile. Breaking from the five
post, Gonna Cha Cha drifted in and out during the 440-yards, but that didn’t hurt his chances. Dueling with Fastpass Regard and holding off A Dream
To Remember, Gonna Cha Cha won by a neck
in :21.864. He has now won four of five starts with earnings of $196,172.
Dosi and Norma
Alvarez bred Gonna
Cha Cha, who is the
first foal to race out of
the Thoroughbred mare
Domeinitchy, who was
injured as a yearling and
never made it to the race-
track. Gonna Cha Cha’s
second dam is winner Perfect Present, who is a half-sister to the dam of stakes winners Lunarpal, Lunarlady and Lunargal.
Gonzalez also saddled second-place finisher Fastpass Regard (Chicks Regard- Gambeleta Caine), who was making the 10th start of his career in the All American
Juvenile. KH Logax bred and owns the gelding, who was ridden by Efrain Gonzalez. Fastpass Regard was previously fourth in
the John Deere Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge.
A Dream To Remember (Corona Cartel-Hallowed Dreams-TB) checked into third for owners R.D. Hubbard, Johnny Cope and Henry Southway. G.R. Carter rode the filly for trainer Paul Jones.
In fourth was favored Lighting Regard (Chicks Regard-Uncovered Streaker), who stumbled
at the start, followed by Shaker Mountain (Panther Mountain-Queen Of Shakem), Jess A Valentine (Feature Mr Jess-I Aint Jo Chick), Spoiled Jess (Feature Mr Jess- Immortal Cartel), Santy Claus (Valiant Hero-Miss Jess Perry), and CR Sweet Te (Tres Seis-Lead Or Run).
