The Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale gained momentum throughout the three-night offering on Aug. 31 - Sept. 2, conclud- ing with the average sale price up 6.2 percent over 2011 figures and up 33.3 percent over 2010 figures. According to a press release from Ruidoso Downs, the total yearling sale average was $46,735.
The highest-selling yearling went through the ring on the final night of the sale, when Carol On My Mind brought $520,000. She was consigned by 6666 Ranch, Agent and purchased by William Smith. Sired by Corona Cartel, Carol On My Mind is out of First Carolina, an earner of $415,047 and winner of the Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity. The Corona Cartel filly is a sister to stakes winner and two-time Grade 1 finalist Denver Pass. First Carolina is a full or half-sister to five stakes winners out of Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash.
First Carolina had two yearlings in the sale. The other one, Coronado Cartel, also by Corona Cartel, made the Top 10 with a $290,000 final bid from Reliance Ranches LLC. The colt was also consigned by 6666 Ranch, Agent. In all, 6666 Ranch consigned four of the Top 10 highest sellers.
The second-highest seller was the First Down Dash colt Wide Open Heart at $500,000. The first foal of Champion Heartswideopen, Wide Open Heart was purchased by Bobby Cox from the Julianna Hawn Holt consignment. Heartswideopen
is a half-sister to Champion Special Phoebe, and graded stakes winners Furyofthewind, Dashingfordestiny and Solid Demand. Wide Open Heart’s second dam is Champion Dashing Phoebe.
There were those two yearlings who hit the $500,000 level, three sold for more than $400,000, eight for more than $300,000, and 12 for more than $200,000.
The top sires by average with more than two sold were: Corona Cartel, $177,333; First Down Dash, $86,931; Valiant Hero, $64,444; Mr Jess Perry, $61,095; and Feature Mr Jess, $54,500.
A broodmare session was held prior to
the yearling sale, with 21 mares catalogued. Twenty mares went through the ring, with 12 selling for an average of $14,208. The highest- selling broodmare was the 6-year-old mare
Cee Cee Otoole, who sold for $45,000 to 21 Partnership from the consignment of Hunter Creek Farm, Agent for Rafter W Stables.

Eyesa Special, stakes winner and track record setter Jessie O Toole, and 2-year-old Sudden Thoughts, who ran second in the All American Futurity-G1 three days later.
