Due to another increase in the number of registered individuals, for a second year the auction was held over three days on Aug. 27, 28 and 29. The stage was the infield of the track of the Hipodromo de Las Américas, under the or- ganization of the Mexican Association of Horse Breeders and Horsemen, AC (AMCCCCM) whose President, Antonio Lobeto Tamez, wel- comed attendees.
Of the 578 yearlings enrolled, 35 were withdrawn, leaving 543 remaining in the ring under the direction of auctioneer Frank Froese, supported by veterinarian Daniel Hernández. These specimens were consigned by 108 breed- ers from different regions of the country and are the offspring of 119 stallions.
The total sale had a value of $91,332,000 pe- sos ($4,522,729 U.S approx.), which represents an increase of 19.32% when compared to 2018, attributable mainly to the 14.8% increase in the number of auctioned yearlings and an average price that grew 4.1%. In dollars, the increase in total sales was 15.3% and 0.5% in the average price, due in part to the gradual devaluation of the peso against the dollar and the low growth of the average value.
Of the total horses entered, 192 individu- als were sold in the ring (35%) and 351 were repurchased (65%), which means an increase of 4% in the proportion of yearlings repurchased compared to 2018; consequently, the percentage of sale was reduced by the same proportion.
The breeders who offered the greatest num- ber of yearlings with 234 (43.1%) were: Salomé Gallegos (35), Cuadra La Presita (31), Abelardo Gallegos (26), Maximiliano Pérez Castañeda (24), Rancho Hacienda Santiago (23), Joaquín Ramón Peláez-Cortés (19), Javier Rosique León (18), Armando León (17), Everardo Múzquiz (15), and Nazario Enriquez Navarrete and Ramiro González Ozuna with 13 head each.
Of the 119 stallions, the main numerical presence corresponded to: Southern Corona (29), Sea Horse Corona (27), Senior Solo (26), Jabuti Eagle (23), Danny Cartel (21), Mr Chiks Perry (17), Texas Kool (12) and Carnegie Haul (10). The 165 yearlings of the aforementioned stallions accounted for 30.4% of the total auc- tioned horses.
The highest average bids were for the prog- eny of Danny Cartel (by Corona Cartel) with an average of $558,095 pesos ($27,636 US) for his 21 yearlings, among which the colt Juanito And Danny reached 1,400,000 pesos ($69,328 US), a record price of all time for a yearling in Mexico. In a similar fashion, his other progeny
- DK Platinum and DK María - were sold for a million pesos or more. Second in this ranking was Fearless Fritz (by Shazoom) with $399,000 pesos ($19,758 US) for his seven yearlings, high- lighted by Proudly Freda at $1,225,000 pesos ($60,662 US). Followed by: Nofishinonafull-
moon (by Separatist), of which his six progeny averaged $347,500 pesos ($17,208 US), includ- ing the colt LA Fishin Place, a paternal brother of Lafishingonabugsmoon, the outstanding runner in Mexico during the 2019 season; Jessti- fied (by Mr Jess Perry), with an average price
of $292,285 pesos ($14,474 US) for his seven yearlings; Sea Horse Corona (by Corona Cartel), with an average price of $238,592 pesos ($11,815 US), whose most appreciated son was the sorrel colt Sea Horse Gamble, with 900,000 pesos ($44,568 US). We close this leading sire list with the 29 offspring of Southern Corona (by Corona Cartel), whose average price was $217,517 pesos ($10,771 US).
The 97 individuals of these six stallions av- eraged $21,165 per head, 154% higher than the general average price ($8,329). Special mention must be made for the stallions Native Cartel (by Corona Cartel) and Senior Solo (by Mr Jess Perry), who from their numerous offspring pre- sented at the auction had two horses sell among the top five sellers: the colt CV Rey Leónidas, consigned by Luis Arturo Vázquez, and the filly Sola Dos, from Cuadra La Presita, respec- tively, with seven-digit figures in the ring.
From our own notes of the sale ring was obtained the list of the 21 individuals that were quoted at $500,000 pesos or more ($24,760 US), which is a part of this report, and from which the leading three hips are covered below.
The list is headed by the colt Alazan Juanito And Danny (Lot 305), which closed
at $1,400,000 pesos ($69,328 US). He was consigned by Cuadra La Presita and is the
son of Danny Cartel out the mare Toles (by Ought To Be First). This was the highest price ever achieved in the history of this sale and exceeds the $920,000 pesos ($47,167 US) from Malefico Cartel in 2018, from the same farm and stallion.
Danny Cartel si 98 is a son of Corona Car- tel and out of Takin Some Gold (by Takin On The Cash), with two wins, one second and a third from five outings at four years of age with $45,653 in earnings. He is placed and a finalist in stakes races in the United States. He is the sire of 75 foals of race age, 53 starters, and 30 winners of 72 races with earnings of $692,127 US (as of June 30, 2019), including six winners of stakes highlighted by: Soliat si 108 with 10 wins and three seconds from 14 starts and $163,745 in Mexico, where he set a New Track Record at 300 yards; and La Beduina Cartel si 102, winner of four races, including the Mexico Futurity, with earnings of $58,575, etc.
The mare Toles, which holds the title of Mexico Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly with a record of 2-2-3 and earnings of $16,310, placed in stakes races in Mexico and is the dam of the aforementioned Soliat si 108 as well as Juanita Cartel, with a 5-2-1 record from 12 starts and
$30,088 in earnings, having placed and been a finalist in Mexican stakes.
The second best offer in the ring was for Proudly Freda at $1,225,000 pesos ($60,662 US), consigned by Rachuán Suárez Kuri. Her sire is Fearless Fritz si 104 (by Shazoom), having placed and been a finalist in multiple stakes races. From his five crops, he has sired 20 horses of race age, 14 starters, and seven winners of
17 races with earnings of $174,676, including the stakes placed Fearles Kid si 94, earner of $92,421, etc.
Proudly Freda is the daughter of Proud Cor- rina si 102, a daughter of Corona Cartel and the winner of $12,990. She is the dam of five foals and two winners: Proud Freda si 92 ($17,335) and Proud One Eyed si 89 ($2,718), a finalist in the Mexico Futurity Consolation.
The third best price was $1,200,000 pesos ($59,424 US) offered for the grey colt CV Rey Leónidas (Lot 165), consigned by Luis Arturo Vázquez. He is by Native Cartel and out of Racing Winner, by Runaway Winner. The
sire of this beautiful individual was an excel- lent runner in Mexico, a winner on the track of $121,579, for which he was named American Champion 2 Year Old and Horse of the Year in Mexico. His offspring includes 134 individuals, 72 starters, 42 winners of 99 races with earnings of $857,752, including nine stakes winners, among which are Mexico Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly Native Posies si 103 ($141,819), Superior Race Horse, Mexico Hi-Point 3-Year-Old
Filly, Mexican Adult Champion NC Sure si 94 ($132,457), etc.
His dam, Racing Winner si 106, is a win- ner, placed and finalist in stakes races in the United States, with earnings of $66,864. She has produced Champion Distance Horse/multiple stakes winner Zoomin Racer si 105 ($202,003), winner and stakes finalist Racing Streak si 101 ($64,484), etc.
In summary, comparing the results presented with those of 2018, there was a 14.8% increase in the number of yearlings offered. The value
of sales increased by 19.3%, which is mainly explained by the dynamism of the demand created by the attractive and growing purses available to the futurities and derbies for which the auctioned individuals are eligible.
A repurchase growth was also observed, which this year was 65%, either because the breeder keeps some or all of his yearlings in own- ership, or by the sales agreements made prior to the auction where the consignor is responsible for buying back the individual in the ring.
Another relevant point is the high demand that the Cuadra La Presita horses have in the market, which, judging by the results obtained, is consolidated as a leader in national upbring- ing, with average prices that tripled the overall average of the event.
