2020 OQHA Hall Of Fame Inductees
The Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association announced its Hall of Fame Inductees, which will be honored Jan. 24, 2020. The OQHA recognizes outstanding individuals, ranches, horses or busi- nesses who contributions through the American Quarter Horse to impact the state of Oklahoma’s Equine Industry. The 2020 inductees are individu- als Melvin & Jackie Bollenbach, the late Charlie Claborn and Mike Perkins, and horses Country Zevi, Golddust Dee Doc and Shawne Bug, as well as Remington Park. Offerman New Canterbury Park VP Racing Operations
Andrew Offerman has been promoted
to Vice President of Racing Operations at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. Offerman is a graduate from the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, has been employed at Canterbury Park since 2005, and previously worked as Senior Director of Racing Operations. Offerman will oversee the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing programs
as well as pari-mutuel operations, track and grounds, security, and television departments.
De Alba Saddles First QH Winner
Former leading jockey Cesar De Alba saddled his first Quarter Horse winner when 2-year-old filly Kool Baby Kool (One Sweet Jess- Kool Kue Chick, Chicks Beduino) won a claim- ing race by 1/2-length at Los Alamitos on Oct. 25. The win was also jockey Oscar Peinado’s first win since July 2018 after being sidelined with injuries. Kool Baby Kue was bred by Steve D. Burns DVM and owned by Casey Whitaker.
Lineup For 2020 Extreme Mustang Makeover
The Extreme Mustang Makeover is a horse training competition that tests a trainers ability to calm and saddle wild untouched mustangs and prepare them for competition. The trainers have been selected and will be given 100-days to train for competition in a series of classes, with the goal of qualifying to the Top 10 Freestyle Performance that includes talents such as riding without a bridle and standing atop the saddle. Trainers will showcase their mustang’s skills, followed by a live auction where their horse can be purchased or adopted. Over $130,000 will be awarded to the win- ners. Events are set for Jan. 23-25 at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, June 25-27 at the Kentucky Horse Park, and Aug. 7-8 at the Lo Angeles Equestrian Center. Correction
In the October 2019 issue in the Looking Back In Photos feature on page 151, the cutline under the photo of Laico Bird with her con- nections was incorrect. Laico Bird was pictured after winning the 1967 All American Futurity with rider Bobby Harmon, owner Floyd Jones Jr. and trainer Jimmie Jones.
Jesse Yoakum Passes Away
Quarter Horse trainer Jesse Yoakum, 69, passed away on Oct. 3 after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Yoakum was a jockey prior to his training career that spanned
30 years. During that time, he saddled 418 Quarter Horse winners with earnings of over $3.2 million. Among his top performers are Beduinos Rusty, winner of the Sam Houston Futurity-G1, and A Glint Of Gold, winner
of the Sam Houston Classic-G2. Yoakum is survived by his wife, Sharon along with many other family members and friends.
 Halloween Contest At Los Alamitos
Los Alamitos hosted the 2019 Halloween Costume Contest to benefit the Greater Anaheim & Cypress Boys & Girls Club and Los Alamitos Youth Center on Oct. 26. Each organization was presented with a $5,000 check from Los Alamitos Race Course owner Dr. Ed Allred. The Grand Prize winner
went to Long Beach resident Matt Schiavo’s Dino-Fossil costume. Other division winners included Enzo Thomas as an explorer in a Yellow Submarine in the 2 and under division.

Equitana USA Show Dates Set
Tickets are now available for the Equitana USA Show that will be held Sept. 25-Sept. 27, 2020 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The event will include a trade show as well as a variety of equestrian personalities, including authors, professional performers, vet- erinarians and others who will their knowledge on a range of disciplines and topics.
