Billy Montgomery LAD Stakes-RG3
MR T PERRY
by Tracy Gantz
Ana Alvidrez’s $4,200 investment in Mr
T Perry is paying off. The three-year-
old gelding sold for that amount at the 2010 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association yearling sale, and he has now earned $49,996. Nearly half of that came from his first stakes victory, in the Jan. 21 Billy Montgomery Stakes-RG3 at Louisiana Downs.
Drawn outside in the nine-horse field, Mr T Perry broke a step
behind most of the field.
Regular jockey J.R. Ramirez
got him going, however,
and they made up ground
in every stride of the 350 yards. With nearly the entire bunch coming to the wire simultaneously, Mr T Perry stuck his neck out first to win in :17.777. Only necks and noses separated the first seven at the finish.
Mr T Perry began his
career at Louisiana Downs early in 2011, breaking his maiden in his second start. He closed out the year at Evangeline Downs with two victories, in a claiming race
and an allowance event, prior to the Billy Montgomery, his first stakes attempt.
Chad Hart bred Mr T Perry in Louisiana out of the Thoroughbred mare T Storm. The mare earned $210,772 while competing on the
East Coast, and she won two six-furlong stakes, the 1999 Dearly Precious Stakes at Aqueduct and Roamin Rachel Stakes at Philadelphia Park. T Storm has five winners from six Thoroughbred starters, including $94,658-earner La Belle Te Fille, who finished third in the 2010 John Franks Memorial Sales Stakes.
Yadira Alvarado’s Intriguing Jess Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Call Me
Intriguing) finished second for jockey Danny Lavergne and trainer Willie Simien Jr. The gelding won the LQHBA Invitational Stakes last November at Evangeline.
Country Talker (Straight Talker-Streakin Miranda), ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr., ran third. Los Primitos owns the gelding, who is trained by Miguel Rodriguez. Country Talker most recently finished third in the Evangeline Downs Futurity.
Completing the field were Oak Tree Corona (Oak Tree Special-First Down Corona), Run Gamie Run (Game Patriot-Run Abby Run), Mr Sonic Boom (Easy Winning Jet-Ms Baseline), Mr Silver Slew (Shake Em White-Louisiana Cash), TF Eyes R Runnin (Easy Winning Jet-Eyes R Special), and The Game Lover (Game Patriot-La Lover). Mossy Oak Tree was scratched.

Moonstone Stakes
FLYIN FISH
by Tracy Gantz
The stewards had a tough job in the Jan.
22 Moonstone Stakes at Hialeah. Skyline Lover, the fan favorite who had never been defeated in six starts at the Florida track, stormed to the wire in front again, two lengths ahead of second-place Flyin Fish, but a crowd- ing incident as the field left the chute brought that result into question.
The stewards disqualified Skyline Lover, ruling that he had come
over, impeding Flyin Fish
and Louisianafeature One.
Because Louisianafeature One had finished last, the stewards placed Skyline Lover last, elevating Flyin Fish to first. Brian Theriot, the rider of Flyin Fish,
also lodged an objection against Skyline Lover, as did trainer Richard Sedillo, trainer of Flyin Fish and Louisianafeature One.
After the incident, Flyin Fish had to alter course. He found a hole between horses
and came on to finish a clear second, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of third-place Royal Initiative.
The Moonstone was a vindication for Flyin Fish, who had lost to Skyline Lover in his
two previous races. Flyin Fish ran sixth in the Orange Blossom Stakes and second, by just
a head, in the Crystal River Stakes. Sedillo conditions the four-year-old
gelding for owners Double Eagle Ranch Inc. and Buena Suerte Equine.
Vessels Stallion Farm LLC and P.K. Thomas bred Flyin Fish from Jazzing Cheree, whose three stakes wins included the 2003 West/ Southwest Championship Challenge-G2. Jazzing Cheree has produced one other stakes winner, Jazzy Fish, in her four winners from five starters.
Sedillo also trains Royal Initiative
(Royal Quick Dash-Fortuna Babe), who finished third and was elevated to second. Adam Martinez rode the gelding for own-
ers Sheri Galvez and Betty Marshall. Royal Initiative finished third in last year’s Red Cell Oklahoma Distance Challenge-G3.
Lucas Racing Inc.’s homebred Special Ela (Special Leader-Ocean Memories) was placed third with Cody Wainscott in the irons and Ron Raper the conditioner. Special Ela won the 2010 Hialeah La Nina Invitational Stakes.
Completing the official order of finish
were Checotah Dale (Eye For Dale-Checotah Kitty-TB), Heza Fast Corridor (Heza Fast Dash- Classic Corridor-TB), Arbeka Lobo (Okey Dokey Dale-Arbeka Bee Quick), Louisianafeature One (Jess Louisiana Blue-Brenda Feature), and Skyline Lover (Feature Mr Jess-Loves That Gold).
