Wego Melody produced 15 foals and 12 starters that earned $33,007. We Go Charge by Diamond Charge, foaled in 1966, was her first foal and her leading money earner at $9,581.26. Some of her other money earners include And Away We Go by Diamond Charge ($7,249.99), Three Chicks Jr by Three Chicks ($6,825.81), Man-In-Charge by Diamond Charge ($4,822.35) and Wego Country Girl by Cherokee Arrow ($3,288).
Diamond Charge was a good cross on Wego Melody, with three of her bigger money earners coming from this cross. He was a stakes winner in the 1961 Inaugural Handicap and second in the 1960 Kansas Futurity, earning $22,436 with 13 wins in 41 starts. Diamond Charge, who set a track record at Ruidoso Downs going 330 yards in :17.00, sired the winners of $477,147 in just 8 crops to hit the ground. He sired 20 stakes winners including Motivator, winner of the 1970 Go Man Go Handicap, a Grade 1 race today.
An interesting correlation is that Diamond Charge is the sire of the great broodmare Sparkling Tip. This mare is the dam of 1975 AQHA Racing Champion Aged Mare Elan Again. She in turn is the dam of Dash Again, winner of the Kindergarten Futurity and the dam of 1987 All American Futurity winner Elans Special. Merridoc, a son of Sparkling Tip, is a stakes winner in the 1979 Golden State Futurity and the Bay Meadows Futurity. He is a leading sire with foal earnings of over $13 million, including his leading money earner Solvency ($632,422).
The Miles breeding practice of going
to good stallions continued with We Go Charge. She was bred to the successful AQHA sires Easy Jet, Bugs Alive In 75, Extra Easy, Moon Lark, Ichibon, and her first two foals, Scooter Bug G and We Go Moon Bug, were by Lady Bug’s Moon.
We Go Moon Bug made six starts with no wins, a second and 2 thirds with earnings of $740.19. But her move into the broodmare band produced another line of Miles champions. We Go Moon Bug was the dam of Kinda Nice We Go, who had seven starts with two wins and two seconds and earnings of $3,960.97. Kinda Nice We Go, by Some Kinda Man QH, is the dam of 6-time stakes winner Some Kinda Easy ($47,452.09), who had wins in the 1984 Western States Futurity, 1985 Golden State Derby and 1986 Nez Perce Crown (at Kalispell, MT). Some Kinda Easy was the 1984 Champion Sprint 2-Year- Old Colt, 1985 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt and 1986 Champion 4-Year-Old & Older Colt. The sire record for Some Kinda Easy shows 173 foals with 83 starters, 48 winners and 20 stakes winners. He sired 38 ROM
Eyesa Knockout, Vaughan’s third broodmare, is a half- sister to Sure Nuff Fast. Beside 2018 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown Hi-Point Champion Admiral Tom, she has also produced these stakes winners...
2-time Supreme Champion, 3-time Champion and 3-time Bronze Medallion winner Major Tom
3-time Champion, 2-time Bronze Medallion winner Panda Doll
GENE MILES AND THE RACING HALL OF FAME
We Go Charge is an ApHC Hall of Fame mare bred by Gene Miles of Wichita, Kansas. This mare was the tie that binds the Gene Miles breeding program together and his entry into the ApHC Hall of Fame. The program started with one Appaloosa mare named Wego Melody.
Gene Miles bought Wego Melody in 1964 as a 2 year old. Reports indicate no formal race record. Her official pedigree shows that she is by Foggy Star by Foggy Dawn. Foggy Dawn is by Taylor’s Sundance by Peter K by Borkan, an Arabian. The dam of Foggy Dawn was Taylor’s Darky, an
unregistered mare. The dam of Foggy Star was a mare named Bay Ann. Some internet pedigree research shows that this mare could be 23 Bay Ann, a daughter of Morgan’s Matador. The dam of Wego Melody was a Thoroughbred mare listed as a Melody TB Mare and her pedigree is unknown.
When we look at the Miles breeding program, we see that his plan was to breed Wego Melody to successful Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred stallions. He wanted to breed runners that would improve the speed in his mare. So, he bred Wego Melody to sires like Diamond Charge QH, Three Chicks QH, Jet Smooth QH, Cherokee Arrow TB, Raise Your Glass TB and Rocket Bar TB.
