of the year nominees
following is a list of broodmares for 2012 that have been nominated for the revived and now 2nd Annual Speedhorse Broodmare
of the Year Award. Since its inception many years ago, the original Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year Award was based on achievement and through their achievement we have honored many of our industries great broodmares. The naming of the 2012 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year will follow that long standing tradition.
The 2012 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year award is dedicated to highlighting the contribution of the mare to the racehorse industry by bringing together the top mares from four AQHA racing categories:
• Dams of the 2012 Champions
• Top 5 Dams of 2012 Money Earners • Top 5 Dams of 2012 Stakes Winners
(ranked first by number of Stakes Winners & second by Money Earned)
• Top 5 Dams of 2012 Stakes Wins (ranked first by number of Stakes Wins & second by Money Earned)
The nominees from these categories per- sonify what it takes to be a great broodmare.
All of these mares are worthy candidates who will compete to be named the Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year. They will be awarded points based on their placing on the respec-
tive categories they qualified for: 5 points for number one in a category down to fifth place receiving one point. The dams of Champions will be awarded 5 points for World Champion, 4 for overall divisional Champions and 3 for age division Champions.
Only Quarter Horse foals are considered and listed for each mare. Under each mare’s name is a summary of her 2012 produce record. The statistics include: Starters, Winners,
Stakes Winners, Number of Stakes Wins, 2012
Money Earnings and 2012 Leading Money Earner with Earnings.
This is followed by the mare’s pedigree and a photo of her leading money earner of 2012. The categories by which the mare made the list of nominees is next, then her 2012 starters are named individually, fol- lowed by any remaining foals that did not race in 2012.
A big part of the Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year Award is to identify the top mares in each category and that is the purpose of this summary. We hope that you enjoy reading about some of the industry’s best broodmares of 2012.
The owner of the Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year Award will receive an engraved trophy signifying their mare as the overall winner. We will be announcing the 2012 winner in our June 7 Broodmare Issue.
