CHRB Dismisses Zilpaterol Positives Over Contaminated Feed
48 positive tests for
zilpaterol from March 1
through March 26 have
been or will be dismissed
by the California Horse
Racing Board (CHRB)
after several brands of sweet feed were found to contain the banned medication, which is used to promote weight gain in cattle. The contamination occurred in products using
a molasses base made at a Purina mill in
Turlock, California, and included Purina Race Ready, Purina Strategy, Purina Omoline-200, Country Acres Horse Feed, and Country Acres Sweet-12. The CHRB also issued a directive instructing all licensed feed vendors to remove the products from state racing facilities until Purina can show that the feed does not contain the drug. Horsemen can return the products, which have the letters “TRL” in the date code, to their distributor. Purina is investigating and will post updates on their website.
