The sire lines we have identified in these 100 stallions are Three Bars, Top Deck, Nasrullah, Hyperion, Northern Dancer, Fairway, Teddy, Man O’ War and Native Dancer. We find that 41 of these stallions trace in the sire line to Three Bars, 22 to Top Deck, 13 to Nasrullah, 10 to Native Dancer,
seven to Hyperion, one to Fairway, three to Teddy, one to Man O’ War and two to Northern Dancer.

The significance of the sire line is brought into focus when we start tracing the origin of a breed. The early foundation Quarter Horse sires would include Traveler and Peter McCue. These two stallions became the modern cornerstone of the breed through their offspring and became the major founding sire lines. These major sire lines came through horses like Traveler’s sons Little Joe and Possum, as well as Peter McCue’s sons like Hickory Bill, Harmon Baker, John Wilkens, Jack McCue and Chief P-5, to name just a few. The inter mating of these stallion’s offspring represent how the sire lines of Traveler and Peter McCue would form the foundation of the breed.
The next phase in the formation of the modern racing American Quarter Horse
came with the introduction of Thoroughbred stallions. A major phase of this introduction of Thoroughbreds and other breeds was done by way of the Army Remount Service. The Army Remount Service introduced the blood of some fashionable Thoroughbreds, thus improving the quality of the horses in general including the Quarter Horse.
