the wife’s mother up to see it before I moved out,” Glowacki said. “She was articulate and impressed me, so I asked her if I could call
her. I’ve been seeing her for five years!” To say that Rose impressed him is an understatement; Glowacki named Black Rosalita after her.
Care for the Caretakers
In addition to his personal losses, Glowacki has been deeply affected by the catastrophic injuries of jockeys and others who work with racehorses. In the ’80s, when he first went
into horse racing, he heard of a jockey named Steve Harris, who rode million-dollar-winner Heavenly. On the day he was injured, Harris was riding another horse that didn’t make the turn. Harris was injured and became a paraplegic.
“As an anesthesiologist, I took care of people on ventilators, and it affected me a lot,” Glowacki said. “There were 40-plus jockeys who were para- plegics or quadraplegics at the time. I was just a small guy in the racing business, but I thought, how can we help?” He has since approached other owners with the idea of donating a portion of winnings—perhaps 1 percent—to a fund for jockeys who are injured while riding. important to him, and he hopes maybe someone else will do the same thing.
“It didn’t seem like too much to me, but no one has shown any interest,” he added. “When Jacky Martin was hurt in 2011, I cut out the
Speedhorse ad and put it on my living room coffee table. I committed to sending him $1,000 if my horse won the Black Gold Derby. These people are so important to us and risk their lives for us every day; we need to take care of them.” Black Rosalita went on to win the Black Gold Derby, and Glowacki sent $1,000 to Jacky Martin.
Vicki Coldiron, who for years boarded Glowacki’s mares and foals at Maui Farms in Purcell, Oklahoma, said, “Dr. Frank is excep- tionally kind and genuinely interested in other peoples’ lives. He’s among those in what I like to call ‘the nice guys network.’”
“Whenever his horses win, he sends money to help injured jockeys, ” Anna added. “He appreciates their efforts and the risks they take. He’s extraordinarily happy when the horses win because he likes to take care of all the people who take care of the horses.”
Dr. Francis Glowacki’s care and concern for his horses and for those who care for horses is not just in thought only, but is reflected in the kindness of his actions.
