The 10th anniversary of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Associa- tion (OQHRA) Betting On A Cure for Rein In Cancer was held June 1 at Remington Park to raise awareness and money for cancer support services
in Oklahoma. The OQHRA invited guests to a buffet dinner in the Eclipse Suite, where both a silent and live auction were held. Money raised goes to the charitable non-profit organization Rein In Cancer to provide support to horsemen across the country and to the Shirley Bowman Nutrition Clinic at the Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City. The benevolent program gives $500 to any member of one of their supporting horseman organiza- tions who is diagnosed with cancer, and this year’s Remington Park event raised over $50,000.
Shorty Koger of Shorty’s Hattery in Oklahoma City established the Rein In Cancer charity in remembrance of her sister. Betting On A Cure was cre- ated in honor of Toni Fry, a local horsewoman and equine artist who inspired Remington Park horsemen and women ten years ago to initiate a charitable program to benefit cancer victims and their families. Fry was present at the event and donated a painting to be auctioned. As a surprise thank you gift, the money raised from the highest bid on her painting was donated back to Fry to assist her with medical expenses as she is once again fighting cancer that has returned.
“Over the last ten years, Betting On A Cure has raised over $400,000 to help cancer patients,” stated OQHRA Director of Special Projects Krissy Bamberg. “Horsemen helping horsemen is what the horse community is
all about. No one has to fight alone! The horse people are always willing to help one another out, and it’s humbling to see the outpouring of generosity through this event.”
The $106,400 Grade 2 Juno’s Request Stakes, which As And Js won, was the annual race in honor of all cancer victims and survivors.
