TINYS CORONA QUEEN
2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year
Lynnder 16
by Stacy Pigott
Tinys Corona Queen may not have turned heads on the racetrack, but her offspring have been making headlines for years and were especially noteworthy in 2018. The late mare was represented by several top runners last year, leading to her recognition as the 2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year.
Owned by James and Marilyn Helzer and bred by Molly B. Morris, Tinys Corona Queen (Corona Cartel-Tiny First Effort, First Down Dash) bested a field of 20 of the best broodmares
State Million Futurity-G1 and the Los Alamitos 2 Million Futurity-G1 in 2018, while also running seventh in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
Pandorum, the third-leading dam of money-earners in 2018, was also represented by just one runner - Champion 3 Year Old, Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding Hotstepper. C. Dwayne Gilbreath saddled Hotstepper
for the owner partnership of Johnny Cope, R.D. Hubbard, Rafter W Stables, and Henry Southway. The One Famous Eagle gelding won the All American Derby-G1 and the Texas Classic Derby-G1, while also running second in the Rainbow Derby-G1 and third in the Mr Jess Perry Derby.
Despite the stiff competition, Tinys Corona Queen narrowly edged out her peers to take the 2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year title, earning points as the number 1 leading dam of stakes winners, the number 3 leading dam of stakes wins, and the number 5 leading dam of money-earners.
Seven of Tinys Corona Queen’s offspring raced in 2018, with Lynnder 16 si 105 arguably the most successful of the bunch. Lynnder 16 made six starts last year for owners Tom Maher and Dick Tobin, and banked $461,146 in the process. Jason Olmstead saddled the Apollitical Jess filly, who won the Grade 2 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity early in the season. At the Ruidoso Downs summer meeting, Lynnder 16 ran third in the Ruidoso Juvenile before capping her freshman campaign with an eighth-place effort in the prestigious All American Futurity-G1.
Tinys Corona Queen’s 2016 foal crop
also featured Reacher 16 si 97, a filly by Inseperable. Reacher 16 raced in Mexico, earning the U.S. equivalent of $20,205 by winning the Mexican Futurity and the Alfredo
