The photo on page 195 shows the 1972 bay stallion Sinn Fein (Three Oh’s-Vansarita Too, Vandy). Sinn Fein only raced as a 2 year old, win- ning the Jet Deck Stakes and running third in both the Sun Country Futurity and the Albuquerque Juvenile Handicap. Bred by Neva Oglesby of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Sinn Fein then moved to the breeding shed where he sired earners of nearly $2.5 million. His top runner was 1985 Champion 3 Year Old/Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Prissy Fein, who earned over $700,000 winning 11 stakes and setting a 400-yard New Track Record at Manor Downs. This mare went on to produce top sire Pritzi Dash.
Sinn Fein was purchased in 1980 by Dr. D.G. Strole of Texas, in 1983 by Rio Grande Valley Breeders Inc. of Texas, and lastly in 1988 by Ernesto Elizaga and Luis Barroso of Mexico. The stallion died in 1992.
Sinn Fein, which is Irish for “we ourselves”, was named after the Irish Republican political party founded in 1905 and active in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is said the group is closely related to the Irish Republican Army (IRA), but is the public and political voice of the movement while the IRA wages an armed campaign. Sinn Fein is currently the second-largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
