The cover of this year’s 2019 Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register honors the late Sun Frost. The 1979 palomino has been a dominant force in the barrel arena for years, as well as in roping, cutting and reining, and a multitude
of other disciplines such as working cow horse, heading, heeling, horseback, etc., with total progeny earnings of more than $2 million.
There is speed on the top side of Sun Frost’s pedigree. He is a son of Doc’s Jack Frost by Doc Bar by Lightning Bar, who is the sire of 1958 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Pana Bar and 1960 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Light Bar. Lightning Bar is by the Thoroughbred Three Bars, who is the sire of 14 AQHA running Champions and the broodmare sire of an additional four AQHA running Champions. Doc’s Jack Frost is out of Chantella by War Chant by Three Bars, and Chantella is out of 1952 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly, 1953 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Bardella by Three Bars.
There is both speed and cow-horse on the bottom of Sun Frost’s pedigree. He is out of Prissy Cline by foundation sire Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. Driftwood Ike, second in the 1969 AQHA Open High-Point Steer Roping, was a foundation sire of cow horses and race horses including a New Track Record setter.
He was also a roping horse and he earned points in heading, as well. Prissy Cline is the grandam of 3-time Palomino Horse Breeders Association World Champion PC Surefire Winner. Prissy Cline is out of Josephine El by 1953 AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Super Charge by Depth Charge, who is the sire of three additional AQHA running Champions in Brigand, Johnny Dial and The Haymaker. This bottom side traces back to foundation Quarter Horses such as Joe Hancock and Chicaro TB.
Combine all that speed with all that cow horse, and you get the versatile sire Sun Frost.
An outstanding barrel sire, Sun Frost progeny includes 4-time PRCA Barrel Racing Horse of The Year and WPRA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year French Flash Hawk, aka Bozo, and PC Frenchmans Hayday, aka Dinero. PC Frenchmans Hayday
was on the cover of the 2017 Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register. Sun Frost is also the sire of the remarkable Frenchmans Guy, who was on the cover of the 2014 Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register. Frenchmans Guy is an all-time leading barrel sire, including Frenchmans Fabulous, aka Fab, a leading barrel sire who appeared on the cover of the 2018 Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register.
Now it is Sun Frost’s turn to grace the cover of the 2019 Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register. All legends must begin somewhere, and we can see that many of those in the barrel industry find their way back to the distinguished Sun Frost. In the movie The Sandlot, the great Babe Ruth said, “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” And, so it is with Sun Frost. He will always be remembered as a legend as his progeny, and theirs, continue to excel.
