just 40 head of broodmares, and that’s pretty unheard of. That’s what he does every night when he comes home: He gets into those books and starts putting together what he’s going to breed next.”
Darian has joined the ranks of breeders as well. “I’d like to take credit for [mine],” she says, “but I depend on Bob for advice.”
She bred the 2009 stallion Jesscuzican (Feature Mr Jess-Covenant Confirmer, Stoli), who earned multiple graded stakes winning status and $252,891 with six wins and six seconds from 27 starts including winning his trials to the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and the All American Derby-G1 along with the Sunland Challenge Championship Stakes-G2 and the West Texas Maturity-G3. He also was named 2014 AQHA Champion Aged Stallion.
“I have him in barrel training right now,” says Darian. “He’s a big kid, but he’s got such a good mind.”
She also bred Dashing Folly’s half-sister, the AQHA Champion Junior Barrel Horse Three Folly Six (Tres Seis-Hempes Folly, Hempen TB).
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
Both Bob and Darian are hands-on with their horses. “I’m here every day,” Bob says. “I’ve got a lot of babies, so I’m a hands-on hand. I cut my own hay; I do the water; I do it all.”
“If you’re going to have horses, you have to be hands-on and know what’s going on,” Darian adds. “We’ve got our whole next year’s livelihood in those babies.”
But as the years fly by, Darian admits she’s thinking of cutting the workload by selling eggs to Dash Ta Fame mares rather than breeding the mares to outside stallions. She’d also like to get a motor home and indulge in some travel.
But Bob’s unique talent and passion for choosing bloodlines that cross well might not allow him to slow down as easily. “Bob has been in business for himself since he was 20,” Darian says. “He’s always been someone who lives his life the way he wants to, and he’s been very blessed to be able to do that.”
Regardless of their business decisions, Bob and Darian are bound to remain in the race- and barrel-horse industry in some capacity and to some degree. “I’ve never met anybody who can look at a pedigree and tell you if a horse is going to win its first race or not, but Bob can,” says the Burts’ resident trainer, Lawson Merritt, whose training skills, the Burts say, have allowed potential buyers to see the greatness
of Dash Ta Fame horses at the sales and who was instrumental in showing the high seller
at the 2018 Copper Spring Ranch horse sale. “There aren’t many people who can produce
Darian Burt bred 2014 Champion Aged Stallion Jesscuzican, who she currently has in barrel training.
Consigned by Bob and Darian Burt, DTF Time Traveler was the $170,000 highest seller at this year’s Copper Spring Ranch Performance Horse Sale.
