It isn’t often that you see a World Champion- caliber horse in a claiming race, but it happened in 2012 with CRM Livewire. The 3-year-old colt,
who could have been claimed for $20,000 on April 9, 2012, at Remington Park, was recently named the 2012 APHA World Champion Running
Paint Horse, Champion Running 3 Year Old and Champion Running 3-Year-Old Colt and.
Last year’s Champion Running 2 Year Old/ Champion Running 2-Year-Old Colt, CRM Livewire made his first start of 2012 in a trial to the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1, finishing fifth and failing to qualify “He didn’t
get out good,” said Dan Jones, of Kemp, TX, who owns the colt with his wife Kaye. “He stumbled, then got boxed in and couldn’t run. That was one of his worst races. At that point, Matt (trainer Matt Whitekiller) and Kaye and I decided to put him in it,” Jones said of CRM Livewire’s drop into claim- ing company. “We decided $20,000 was a lot of money if he got claimed, but we didn’t think he’d get claimed. Still, I was worried.”
CRM Livewire, who is named after Jones’ granddaughter Callie R. Maysbury, won that claiming race and jumped back up to allow-
ance and stakes company. He was second in the Lewis Wartchow Memorial-G1 and returned for back-to-back wins in the trials and finals of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1. His time of :17.318 was the fastest ever run in the finals of the Speedhorse Derby. He then ran second
in the Lorelei Derby-G2, and was invited to the APHA Masterpiece Challenge. Getting stronger as the year went on, he raced to a 3/4-length win in the Masterpiece for another stakes record. In true World Champion fashion, he returned to win the Talimena Handicap a short seven days later.
In all, CRM Livewire’s lifetime record stands at 18-7-4-2 with $90,190. “He outran some really good horses,” Jones said. “He’s just a great horse. He’s some- thing special.” The Joneses also bred CRM Livewire, and his dam is in foal for a full sibling due in 2013.
CRM Livewire enjoyed a well-deserved rest under Whitekiller’s care in Sallisaw, OK, and is being pointed at Remington Park’s spring meet. Plans call for him to race through 2013, then embark on a stallion career at JEH Stallion Station.
“We’re going to try to make him World Champion again,” Jones said. “He’s sound as a dollar, has matured completely and is filled out. He’s doing great.”
CRM Livewire is the game winner of the 2012 Talimena Handicap at Will Rogers Downs.
