Praise For Larry Thornton
I’m now 76 and have spent a lifetime in
the Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and cattle breeding business. During this time, I have stressed the value of elite females in all breeding programs. The books, Matriarchs: Great mares of the 20th Century and Matriarchs Volume II, More Great Mares of Modern Times both by Edward
L. Bowen published by BloodHorse Inc. and the magazine Speedhorse and the Blood Horse have all featured articles about Blue Hen Mares.
I was particularly pleased with the work by Larry Thornton, “Lil Bit Rusty, the Making of a Modern Blue Hen mare” in the December 28, 2012 Speedhorse. His coverage was complete, comprehensive and well prepared.
I would like not only to see you cover more Blue Hen Mares in future issues but wondered
Sincerely,
Herb Goldie, Ontario, CAN
whether there are any plans to reprint some of the Blue Hen articles in a book format. Perhaps Larry Thornton could pull a project like this together.
Larry’s inclusion of the various pedigrees makes for a quick, easy study and should be use- ful to all. In similar articles without pedigrees included, I found myself jumping back and forth to the computer to get pedigree extensions. Larry’s format eliminated this action.
I know we can get a lot of the information about Blue Hen Mares on the computer sites but it is still nice to have a book format to hold, to study and to read. All reasons the Speedhorse magazine is still on my list of must reads for each issue but after 40 years of subscription, the Blood Horse is not.
from racing are Santa Anita, Del Mar and Golden Gate, while Fairplex Park, Hollywood Park and Los Alamitos reported a decline.
New Immigration Rule To Take Effect In March
A new immigration rule, which will take effect in March, will allow undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens to apply for a waiver while in the U.S. Previously, immigrants had to leave the U.S. and apply for a visa in their home country. The move comes as Congress takes up broad immigration reform and will positively effect thousands of those in the horse industry, including grooms, farm workers, and their families.
Monty Roberts Hosts Training Class For Brazilians
Mundo Equestre, the largest equestrian maga- zine in Brazil, organized a special training session for 32 Brazilians by world-renowned horse trainer Monty Roberts and his wife Pat. Roberts demon- strated through his trust-based training methods that traditional horse breaking does not need to be violent. The training took place Feb. 5-9 at Roberts’ Flag Is Up Farms in Solvang, California.
Northern Racing Quarter Horse Association Awards
The 2012 Northern Racing Quarter Horse Association (NRQHA) Award were held Jan.
5, and we listed the award winners along with
a of the banquet in our Feb. 8 issue on page 94. However, we mistakenly referred to the NRQHA as the North Dakota Quarter Horse Racing Association. We are sorry for the error and con- gratulate all of the winners of the 2012 Northern Racing Quarter Horse Association awards.
